(Sam Worthington stars in ?Wrath of the Titans.?)
By Bill Wine
KYW Newsradio 1060
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? So, we move from clash to wrath with essentially the same result: complete uninvolvement.
Wrath of the Titans, the lacklustre sequel to 2010?s lacklustre Clash of the Titans, is another yawnworthy action-adventure fantasy.
Clash, a remake of a namesake 1981 sword-and-sorcery epic, was based on Greek mythology and all the larger-than-life melodrama taking place on Mount Olympus.? The special effects may have been in 3-D, but everything else was in 1-D.? At best.
Wrath of the Titans takes place a decade after Clash.? Perseus, the demigod son of Zeus, played once again by Sam Worthington, lives the quiet life of a village fisherman and the sole parent of his ten-year-old son following his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken.
But the battle for supremacy between the gods and the Titans goes on.? The gods feel they are losing control of the imprisoned Titans, who are ruled by three brothers ? king of the gods and the ruler of Mount Olympus, Zeus (Liam Neeson); god of the underworld, Hades (Ralph Fiennes); and god of the sea, Poseidon (Danny Huston) ? who have long since overthrown their powerful father, Kronos.
But Perseus cannot help but be pulled back into the battle to rescue his father when Hades, who has made a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus, unleashes hell on earth, teaming with the traitorous god of war, Ares (Edgar Ramirez).
Perseus turns to the warrior Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon?s demigod son Agenor (Toby Kebbell), and the fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), and embarks on a quest into the treacherous underworld to rescue Zeus and overthrow the Titans, thus saving mankind in the name of possible further sequels.
Director Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles; Darkness Falls; The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning), works from a by-the-numbers, gods-and-monsters screenplay by Dan Mazeau and David Leslie Johnson, based on a story by Mazeau, Johnson, and Greg Berlanti, that is silly and literal-minded in the extreme.
Oh, it?s got plot points galore, but none of them register dramatically enough to make us care while we?re gaping.
No matter how young you are, this kidflick feels from first frame to last like something you?ve already outgrown.? Our sense of wonder never makes its way out of the popcorn box.
It?s the action sequences, most of them involving extended hand-to-hand combat, that obviously comprise the tail that wags the dog here.? The film actually feels like one long action sequence.? Ands is that action kinetic, as intended? Sure.? Moreover, it?s antic and frantic.
But is it at all suspenseful, also as intended, even for a moment?? Puh-leeze.
With the unleashing of a ?multitide of terrifying demons? ? that is, killing-machine monsters such as the Makhai and the Chimera and the Minotaur and the Cyclops, rendered in digital-special-effects splendor as harbingers of doom ? we come to realize to our chagrin that we are back once again in soulless Transformers territory.
Oh, joy ? CGI.? Standing for, in this case, Crushingly Gigantic Indifference.
Worthington is ? broken record time ? a charisma-less leading man, although he?s not helped much by the script.? But to watch actors as gifted as Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes stand around and deliver this silly, anachronistic dialogue is to see severe underemployment in closeup.
But let?s get back to the important stuff: yes, the film is available, in case you?re interested, in highly unnecessary 3-D.
So we?ll clash with 1? stars out of 4 for the juvenile and not worthwhile Wrath of the Titans.
No wrath incurred in this corner.? Just boredom.

University of Stavanger
Tablet computers are being adopted by behavioural scientists at Norway's University of Stavanger (UiS) as a more efficient way of obtaining information from young children.
A new data acquisition app developed by NettOp, the university's department for web-based education, will not only save time for researchers but also be more involving for the youngsters.
Underlying this move is the increasingly frequent sighting of children playing with tablets or smart phones belonging to their parents.
The intuitive user-friendliness of a tablet's touch-sensitive screen means that infants as young as two or three years old can master the technology without difficulty.
This in turn has led to a minor digital revolution among the very youngest, to whom a tablet in the home is as natural as a picture book.
Guided by scientists
The new app will be used by the Centre for Behavioural Research at the UiS in its Ready for School (Skoleklar) project, which focuses on the transition from pre-school to infant classes.
Particular attention is being paid in this research to the way various factors influence learning and performance by children in early-years education.
The tablet-based system comprises six tasks which will assess children's word comprehension, reading, number comprehension, memory and self-regulation.
It will initially be used with children aged five-six in nursery school. Some of the tasks will be guided by the scientist, while others will be done by the children under the supervision of adults.
Competent children
"We see that kids are becoming competent with a tablet at a younger and younger age," says Petter Mordt, the app's creator. "But few scientists have made the move to this device yet."
NettOp, where Mordt works as a developer, specialises in producing content and solutions for web-based learning and communication.
The aim of the app is to find a way to enhance involvement by very young children, explains associate professor Ingunn Strksen at Centre for Behavioural Research. She came up with the idea because completing long assignments using pen and paper can be demanding for this age group. "I hope and believe this format can help," she adds.
Expecting electronics
"We've also used flash cards when collecting information from youngsters, and usually tell them they are doing something that's like a game.
"But they don't always understand that the cards are meant to remind them of a game. When we say 'game', they now expect something electronic."
As a reward after the assessment, the children will also be able to choose a simple game on the tablet in order to help maintain their concentration during data collection.
Innovative project
Registration and storage of the information obtained from the children will be easier with the tablet, Strksen points out.
"This approach demands quite a lot of resources during the development of the app, but can make everyday life much simpler for the people collecting the data and for the children taking part."
Both the researchers and the developers regard this as an innovative project, and that view is expressed by NettOp head Atle Lkken.
"I haven't heard of anyone doing anything similar, at least not in Norway," he says. "That's why we thought this project was particularly stimulating."

Did you stack to your observation audit? Does a chilly, wet experience slip around your system since you wait to go into The Space? You recognize, The Dark area with all the current shades drawn and the couch you put on to whilst Health professional Ratchet seems to be taking excellent enjoyment in modifying you into an element that looks like old sparky, the popular Sarasota power couch. Well she looked over you like she was sizes your remaining help with the male out entry didn?t she?
Then A Fort Collins Eye Doctor will come going for walks in at time-Alright in truth you?d to have to wait just minutes a lot more alone,?in a darkish area,?in a couch that somewhat resembles Old Sparky,? with lots of time to contemplate that which was approaching upcoming.
What on earth is Valium approaching upcoming is an inadequate justification with the we are carrying out as Observation Medical doctors or no justification in any respect. Most people are not appearing to need to know, so if you are experience two methods away from getting your eye balls water-boarded (which furthermore we make the most of eyeball water-boarding and delay extremely well when an individual has a dangerous chemical substance poured within their observation), it really is time for you to get started asking questions. (And for your Optometrist to accept line and start responding to them).
1st and a lot Cialis?essential To keep simply have granted disappointment marks to two people for their observation examination so the chances of you completing can be better than 99.999%. Those two citizens were each achieving a disappointment quality within their personalized relationships prior to their observation audit so if you are possessing a poor evening and want to raise your voice, yell and chuck points it would be a smart idea to reschedule you observation assessment and devote the afternoon testing out for your regional basketball crew.
I find numerous people turn into quite involved they?re going to receive the improper health professional prescribed considering that the contact lens improvements are incredibly difficult to differentiate. From my aspect with the eye-sight audit this is a several perspective. We start by getting through an tool known as an auto refractor. It lets you do exactly what it known as immediately it ?stresses in the optics of this observation and ultizing math concepts known as trend entry analysis it determine what health professional prescribed you need. You won?t have to start a issue besides glimpse instantly forward within the goal, continue to keep Cialis?continue to, and also have top of your head constrained against the leading head rest. Amazingly points clear up once the tool whirs and hums and prints out of the health professional prescribed. We refer to this an objective refraction or reading through since it is solely outside of your spoken tendencies.
The poor piece. The asst who aspires your help on her behalf sibling in regulation companions you to the InareaIn. You recognize whets approaching upcoming-of course it?s one or two, one or two, on or two. So you assumed we?d to learn numbers for optics? Each subsequent watch seems to be unreadable whilst receiving more intense. It opens up among the 2 main Cialis?poor decisions you are granted even so the eye doctor appears to be intent on disregarding that and offering you far worse decisions.
Really this is a properly designed tests string known as pressured option (uh ohio right here will come that water plank). Truly, should you can remember the old face Television?s where you flipped in the evening station and rear once or twice you might area to the clearest spot. This the main observation examination is summary and is dependent upon your tendencies of just apparent variances. It wall mounts to the host to maximum clearness. Sadly, that endpoint is usually wherever it looks every bit as poor with each decisions. Even now, we drive you to choose. That allows your eye medical professional to determine how repeatable your tendencies ?are and provide makes sense of precisely how precise the health professional prescribed might be. More often than not in the observation center, it?s going to be repeatable inside the reliability level that upgraded lenses can be accomplished in right now. This means once we look at you another day or next week the chances are quite high your eyes will go through for this also health professional prescribed.
Up coming I am going to compare all those summary tendencies with what the attention pc worked out. If there are considerable variances I might replicate reading through with both methods soon after working with lowers to avoid focusing improvements effecting the results, specially in little ones. A new look at could be carried out with help used tool, the forerunners to the auto refractor we use right now. Much better minimal technical, it can do let me use whatever variations in focusing developing whilst taking an objective measurement.
Finally, a very good eye doctor need to look at old eyeglasses health professional prescribed and how you can see by it. That?s a great gauge of precisely how considerably switch we anticipate seeing inside the new health professional prescribed. Once you add most of these points in concert, it really works well and seldom is usually a health professional prescribed improper each say. It is more prevalent to not understand simply how much switch a person can accept (you can be suitable and improper while doing so), or crash in interacting unusual vision requirements that has to be resolved (like an individual implementing desktops 70 several hours each week in an unusual yardage being affected by dry up eye balls and pc eye-sight syndrome).
Shell out some additional min?s to talk your vision requirements and distances you?re working at with the eye doctor. Also make clear any complications you?ve had adjusting to new eye glasses previously. Then you should never apprehensive about how unreadable points continue to keep searching throughout your observation examination-you will find there?s 99.999% chances you will note well ultimately and get to help keep your help!

Since you spend so much time inside your home, the way it makes you feel can have a big impact on your overall emotional state. If you have a home business it is even more important that you value your home?s appearance, as you do not leave the property for 8 hours every day to work elsewhere. Projects that add joy to your home are good investments to your emotional well being.

When you are considering renovating the interior of your home, it is important to consider the comfort factor. Every home has its flaws, but trying to live with one that makes you very unhappy will just make you more stressed. Never leave comfort at the bottom of your list. Always make choices that improve and maximize you comfort by striving for both function and comfort in every aspect of your decor. If your computer chair hurts your back, replace it. Make sure your storage areas are within easy reach. Simply getting a round coffee table to help a bruised knee can make a world of a difference.
Try increasing the area of your home. Regardless of how neat and clean you might be, your home may still seem like it is not large enough. You can increase your level of comfort by adding more room to your house. Even what may seem like a tiny bit of extra room can go a long way in eliminating the stress of clutter.
New features are perfect for home fun. Spas, hot tubs, and pools are some popular choices. Some affordable projects that can add value to your home are an in-ground basketball hoop or a home gym.
Examine your lighting. By changing your lighting, you can reduce the areas of dark spots and increase the overall appeal. A quick and very easy way to improve your home?s lighting is to check for old bulbs. These bulbs create a dimmer ambient light, so when you replace them, it can prove enlightening by brightening your spaces. Ratcheting up the complexity a bit, you could alter the light fixtures themselves, giving your home a fresh look.
Experiment with growing things by converting your outdoor space into a beautiful and colorful garden retreat. If you have more of a black thumb than a green one, look into hiring a gardening firm to give you some assistance. Whether you do the work, or a professional does, you are going to enjoy the serenity that the fresh greenery that surrounds you will provide. Having a garden can improve the quality of the air in your area, provide you with fresh produce and give off wonderful fragrances.

A few simple changes can really increase the value of your home. For example, you can fix your home?s look by painting it, adding new windows, and fixing your roof.
Metabo Akku-Bohrschrauber
Home improvement projects can have a tremendously positive effect on your mood and the quality of your life by making all the time you spend within your home more pleasant. Therefore, home improvements you make or are thinking of making are not only an investment in your home, but also an investment in yourself.

American Chemical Society
SAN DIEGO, March 25, 2012 Bassam Z. Shakhashiri, Ph.D., president of the American Chemical Society (ACS) the world's largest scientific society today described initiatives on climate science, the education of future scientists and commemoration of a landmark federal law that engendered some of the nation's greatest universities. Those initiatives will be the theme of Shakhashiri's presidential year.
A chemistry professor who holds the William T. Evjue Distinguished Chair for the Wisconsin Idea at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Shakhashiri discussed the projects during a press briefing at the ACS' 243rd National Meeting & Exposition. Almost 18,000 scientists and others are expected to attend the meeting, one of the largest scientific gatherings of 2012. They will hear more than 11,700 reports Sunday through Thursday on new advances in scientific fields that range from astronomy to zoology, and view new laboratory instruments, books, journals and other products in the large exhibition.
After ACS' founding in 1876, a tradition emerged that each new ACS president defines a theme and identifies initiatives for the society during his or her year in office. Shakhashiri's theme, "Advancing Chemistry and Communicating Chemistry," incorporates responses to some of the great challenges facing scientists and society in the 21st century.
"As a learned society, ACS and its members have significant responsibilities to bring our scientific and educational acumen to address human needs," said Shakhashiri. "We advance chemistry through research, education and innovation. Communicating chemistry to fellow scientists and to the world is one of ACS' core functions. Communicating the values and role of the chemical sciences to nonspecialists is another of our important responsibilities."
Shakhashiri's initiatives involve the 150th anniversary of a landmark federal law called the Morrill Land Grant Act, education of scientists at the graduate level for the 21st century and climate science.
Morrill Land Grant Sesquicentennial Celebration
This initiative commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862, which provided states with 30,000 acres of land for each of its members of Congress. States sold the land to raise money to establish colleges focusing on agriculture, science, engineering and liberal arts. Without that money, it would have been impossible for states to fund such institutions. A second Morrill Act in 1890 was passed specifically to support land-grant institutions for African-Americans. Today, more than 100 institutions have land-grant status, including many historically Black colleges and universities. Cornell University, The University of Wisconsin-Madison, Ohio State University and Tuskegee University are just a few examples of land-grant institutions. Land-grant institutions today produce more than half of all Ph.D. scientists.
ACS will celebrate this occasion with a retrospective and a prospective look at chemistry. For a "look back," Shakhashiri invites chemists to join in by publicizing the accomplishments of chemical scientists from their institutions, regardless of land-grant status. "We should embrace and celebrate our rich contributions as chemists, as a discipline, and as a professional society to the larger society in which we live," he said. He explained that the 243rd National Meeting & Exposition being held here this week offers many opportunities to "look ahead" at where chemistry is going. Attendees will hear about the latest chemistry innovations directly from scientists who are on the cutting edge.
ACS Presidential Commission on Graduate Education
Graduate education is advanced education that students pursue, typically after earning a bachelor's, or undergraduate, degree. Graduate education includes doctoral degrees, or Ph.D.s, almost 50,000 of which are granted annually. Students in science Ph.D. programs typically take courses for the first two or three years, then conduct research. The programs may last four to six years. Afterwards, newly-minted Ph.D.s may join the workforce or continue as "postdoctoral fellows" for another two to three years before seeking jobs in academia or industry.
The commission will examine the purposes of graduate education and research in the chemical sciences and the needs and aspirations of graduate students. The commission is chaired by Larry R. Faulkner, Ph.D., who is president emeritus of the University of Texas at Austin. Paul L. Houston, Ph.D., is executive director and dean of the College of Sciences and professor, School of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The commission and its working groups will have "listening sessions" with graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, early-career faculty, underrepresented groups, business groups, institutions of higher education, professional and educational organizations, and international leaders in science and education. From these meetings, the commission will develop recommendations to modify graduate education to successfully prepare students for their professional careers and to face changing human needs over the next 50 years.
ACS Presidential Working Group on Climate Science
Chemists are well-versed in the science underpinning their own specialties, such as developing new medicines, products to enhance food production, plastics and other materials that impact everyday life in positive ways. Many, however, may be less familiar with the intricacies of climate science, such as the number of gases (in addition to carbon dioxide) that can be greenhouse gases and, indeed, the fact that "greenhouse" is a misnomer for the actual mechanisms of global warming.
To equip chemists with a deeper understanding of the science of climate change, the working group is developing a Web-based toolkit that explains the topic for use by ACS members to educate themselves. The American Chemical Society Climate Science Toolkit toolkit explains concepts, such as which gases are greenhouse gases, their sources, changes over time and other essential information.
"If, between now and the time I die, I don't succeed in having an intelligent conversation with my neighbor about evolution, that would be very sad," he says. "But if I don't succeed in having an intelligent conversation with my neighbor about climate change, the consequences later in the century could be catastrophic." Jerry A. Bell, Ph.D., a noted chemistry educator who is a faculty associate with the Wisconsin Initiative for Science Literacy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, chairs the Climate Science Working Group.

Whenever discussing regarding satellites phones, of course we all have been aware of your technology in particular those who currently subscribe to satellite television Satellite phone sales.
Simply put, just how satellite technology functions is actually having an globe bound unit (at home with regard to television programming) which in turn will certainly communicate with the satellite inside outer space.
Tv set stations which provides the television services will broadcast their broadcast to a satellite tv for pc in space (circulating the planet earth) and after that the satellite tv for pc will broadcast the broadcast to all satellite tv for pc receiver unit systems on earth including the ones attached to each of our homes (usually in dish forms)
The satellites being used for the purpose of television set broadcasts are known as communications geostationary satellites because of it really is capabilities to transmit sounds, info, video, as well as graphics derived from one of location to another location.
The type of communication utilized involves the by using a satellite tv for pc capable of communicating, transmitting television set broadcasts, radio stations or what ever signal carried from the globe bound satellite tv for pc transmitter.
The first communication satellite, Undertaking SCORE, was released on Eighteenth December 1958 for you a Christmas time announcement via President Eisenhower to everyone.
Important examples of satellite sales and marketing communications during the Space race:
?62: Telstar: Transoceanic communications satellite tv for pc.
1972: Anik One: Canadian Very first communications satellite tv for pc.
1974: Westar: American 1st sales and marketing communications satellite.
1976: Marisat: Very first moving sales and marketing communications satellite.
Apart from satellite television, one other popular use of satellite tv for pc technology to the public could be the satellite telephone. It provides substantial coverage anyplace around the world whether you?re at the center of the Pacific Ocean or in your dense Amazon jungle satellite phone plans.
Eventhough it is expensive, your satellite telephone is important to prospects who regularly explore as well as sail around the world as there are simply no normal telephones that has insurance in quiet areas.
Satellite tv telephones had been first launched in the Nineties. However, product sales were not very good as a selection of problems had been encountered from the satellite mobile phone companies.
Nevertheless, the satellite tv for pc telephone got lately improved popularity as an illustration the Iridium satellite tv for pc telephone is currently utilizing Sixty six satellites because of its 100,Thousand clients. Furthermore, Globalstar has recorded 115,Thousand clients around the world.
Satellite mobile phone, also known as ?Satphone? is a mobile telephone system which allows communication via communication geostationary satellites that moves around the world?s orbit for throughout the world telephone insurance.
Many of the satellite tv for pc phones utilize Low Planet Orbit (LEO) geostationary satellites, enabling that to provide a further coverage and much better sound quality.
The visible difference between a satellite tv for pc telephone plus a mobile phone (also called a cellular phone) is that satellite tv for pc phones broadcast signals for the nearest geostationary satellites in space while the cell phone transmits indicators to the nearest earth destined cellular circle.
Satellite phones utilizes LEO?s to form a network which then allows a nearly global insurance.
Some satellite tv for pc phones use geostationary orbiting satellite tv for pc services which can be usually located between Thirty-five,400 km and Forty-eight,280 km from the world?s surface.
Nevertheless, as Capricorn satellites sit closer to the global surface and its network gives users using better words clarity than the geostationary satellites located further from your earth.
The transmission hold off is around 2.5 mere seconds thus giving Capricorn satellites a bonus in the form of words clarity and quality of conversation.

Bank of America will now offer customers facing foreclosure the option to rent their home, for less money than the mortgage. CNBC?s Diana Olick talks about the program, which will be tested in New York, Nevada and Arizona.
>> half-hour with the test run of a new program aimed at keeping struggling homeowners inside their own homes. bank of america says it will offer the option to rent their home for less than the money than mortgage. the program will be test in the new york , arizona. if it is success tfl bank tells the new york time it can be expanded. real estate correspondent diana olick joins me from washington, d.c. explain to us how this program will work. it will obviously take folks from a mortgage into a leasing program. again they get to stay in their own homes?
>> yeah. that's the idea. they want to help people stay in their own homes but they cannot afford to pay the mortgage. what they're offering. this is a pilot program . it will be less than 1,000 people can't be offered this. you can't apply for it. they're saying if you trade in the deed to your home, they will offer you a rentback. a rental lease as if you were renting anybody else's home and you can stay in the home. eventually they will sell the home to an investor if this program works out, if they widen the program out. the biggest question is how many people will really want to do this. a lot of bad feeling about the bank foreclosing out. do you really want to rent back from the bank? in states like new york where the foreclosure time lines are really long, three years, a lot of folks have been sitting in their home without paying a mortgage payment for up to two or three years so why would they want to pay rent now? we spoke to some executives. they say this is a pilot program them want to get the answers to these questions.
>> how do people qualify for this if there are certain people throughout where their ears are perking up to a program like this. how tough will it be to qualify?
>> again, it will be an by invitation only program. i'll give you a couple. your bank has to be owned by bank of america . you have to be delinquent for more than 60 days and you have to have exhausted all tries to modify the home and alternatives like short sales. you have to have a high balance on your loan in relation to your current property value so you're at risk of foreclosure. no junior leans. you have to still be living in the home and you have to have adequate income to make that rental payment. if you meet all those, you're good to go if they ask you.
>> thanks so much. just passing along to everybody, don't forget to check out diana's blog. you can do so at realty check.cnbc.com.

Scientists want to know if planets can form near the supermassive black hole at the core of the galaxy. If so, the black hole could fling them out into space at enormous speeds that, from our vantage point, could appear to approach the speed of light.?
Deep in the heart of the Milky Way, where a supermassive black hole lurks, conditions are so chaotic that planets ? and perhaps life ? can't form: Or can they?
Skip to next paragraphA small team of astronomers suggests one way to answer the question, at least as it relates to planets: Monitor the Milky Way's rejects ? stars that the galaxy's central black hole has kicked toward intergalactic space ? for signs of planets.
Such planets ? orbiting a star or traveling alone ? so far are hypothetical. The center of the galaxy is so shrouded in dust that planet-hunting as it's practiced in our galactic neighborhood is futile.
But individual ejected stars, dubbed hypervelocity stars because they are ejected at such great speeds, are anything but hypothetical. The first stellar speedster was reported to be leaving the galaxy in 2005. Since then, the total has grown to at least 16 hypervelocity stars reported.
Hunting for more in the galaxy's halo, where they are most obvious, then monitoring them for the signature of a planet's transit across the star's face, would help settle the question of whether the center of the galaxy is hospitable for planet formation, explains Avi Loeb, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass.
He is one of the co-authors of a paper set for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society in Britain that looks at the ejection mechanism and how one might go about the hunt.
With planet-hunting efforts such as NASA's Kepler mission finding hundreds of confirmed planets, with at least 2,000 candidates waiting in the wings for confirmation, the notion that stars at the galactic center also host planets would seem reasonable.
But several factors could weigh against planet-making there, Dr. Loeb explains.
The broader region around the black hole is a hotbed of star formation. Stars are roughly a million times more densely packed there than the stars in the sun's neighborhood. At the galactic center, the stars that form generally are more massive than the sun, burn hotter, and flit about the galactic center at speeds of more than 2 million miles an hour, compared with roughly half a million miles an hour for the sun.
Under those cramped, turbulent conditions, it would be hard for a star's disk of dust and gas to hang together long enough to allow planets form.
Still some observations hint that planets might form close to the Milky Way's center.
For instance, researchers have noted intriguing flare-like events as material gets heated, compressed, then swallowed via the black hole's extraordinary gravitational tug. Evidence suggests that the material might not be a star but?asteroids ? planetary building blocks.

Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care
This release is available in German.
The fixed drug combination of aliskiren and amlodipine (trade name: Rasilamlo) was approved in April 2011 for the treatment of people with hypertension in whom aliskiren or amlodipine alone has an insufficient effect. In an early benefit assessment pursuant to the "Act on the Reform of the Market for Medicinal Products" (AMNOG), the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) examined whether this drug combination offers an added benefit compared with the present standard drug therapy in people with essential hypertension. However, such an added benefit cannot be inferred from the dossier, as the drug manufacturer deviated from the specifications of the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) and chose a different comparator therapy.
Calcium channel blocker and ACE inhibitor specified as comparator therapy
Aliskiren interferes with the production of blood-pressure controlling hormones (the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system). Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that reduces calcium uptake in the smooth muscle cells of the arterial blood vessels. This expands the vessels and hence reduces blood pressure. In the new fixed combination both drugs are contained in a single pill.
The G-BA has specified the drug combination of a calcium channel blocker (amlodipine or nitrendipine) and an ACE inhibitor (lisinopril, ramipril or enalapril) as the appropriate comparator therapy. ACE inhibitors also interfere with the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.
Drug manufacturer compared fixed combination with free combination
In its dossier the pharmaceutical company compared the fixed combination with the free combination of the two drugs and thus deviated from the G-BA's specifications. From IQWiG's point of view the company did not sufficiently justify this deviation. Neither did it submit studies that would have been relevant to an assessment of the fixed combination of aliskiren and amlodipine versus the appropriate comparator therapy specified by the G-BA. Therefore no proof of an added benefit can be inferred from the assessment presented in the manufacturer dossier.
G-BA decides on the extent of added benefit
The procedure for inferring the overall conclusion on the extent of added benefit is a proposal from IQWiG. The G-BA, which has opened a formal commenting procedure, decides on the extent of added benefit.
The website gesundheitsinformation.de, which is issued by IQWiG, provides easily understandable brief information (German version).
The G-BA website contains both general information on benefit assessments pursuant to 35a Social Code Book V and specific information on the assessment of the fixed combination of aliskiren and amlodipine (German version).
