OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - Nine people were killed in tornadoes that swept through central Oklahoma on Friday, part of a storm system that caused widespread flooding in Oklahoma City and its suburbs, the state's chief medical examiner said on Saturday. The dead included two children and seven adults, said Amy Elliott, a spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office. The death toll earlier had been reported as five.

Turkish PM Erdogan calls for end to protests as clashes flare

ISTANBUL/ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan made a defiant call for an end to the fiercest anti-government demonstrations in years on Saturday, as thousands of protesters clashed with riot police in Istanbul and Ankara for a second day. The unrest was triggered by government plans for a replica Ottoman-era barracks housing shops or apartments in Istanbul's Taksim Square, long a venue for political protest, but has widened into a broader show of defiance against Erdogan and his Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP).

More than 1,000 killed in Iraq violence in May

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - More than 1,000 people were killed in violence in Iraq in May, making it the deadliest month since the sectarian slaughter of 2006-07, the United Nations said on Saturday, in a surge stoking fears of a return to civil war. Nearly 2,000 people have been killed in the last two months as al Qaeda and Sunni Islamist insurgents, invigorated by the Sunni-led revolt in Syria and by Sunni discontent at home, seek to revive the kind of all-out inter-communal conflict that killed tens of thousands five years ago.

Fighting in Syria's Qusair, U.N. says world watching

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian troops and Hezbollah guerrillas besieging the border town of Qusair fought with rebels on Saturday as the United Nations warned all sides they would be held accountable for the suffering of trapped civilians. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said fighting was taking place inside Qusair and in villages around it, largely controlled by President Bashar al-Assad's forces who have cut off access to the town.

Frankfurt 'Blockupy' protesters clash with police for second day

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - German police used pepper spray and batons against anti-capitalist demonstrators from the Blockupy movement on Saturday during a second day of protests against Europe's austerity policies. Suspect under investigation in Toulouse killings probe: source

PARIS (Reuters) - A French judge put under formal investigation on Saturday a 31-year-old man suspected of helping an al Qaeda-inspired gunman prepare a shooting spree in the southern France city of Toulouse last year, a judicial source said. The man is suspected of providing weapons and a bullet-proof vest to Mohamed Merah, who killed seven people including three Jewish children and three soldiers in and around Toulouse in March 2012 before he was shot dead by police.

China accuses U.S. of 'prejudice' over 1989 protest comments

BEIJING (Reuters) - China accused the United States of "prejudice" on Saturday after the U.S. State Department renewed a call for Beijing to fully account for its bloody crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators in June 1989. The United States should "immediately rectify its wrongdoings and stop interfering in China's internal affairs so as not to sabotage China-U.S. relations", Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in an English-language statement released via the official Xinhua news agency.

TRENTO, Italy (Reuters) - Italy's Prime Minister Enrico Letta said on Saturday his government aims to reduce youth unemployment to below 30 percent in the next few years with a mixture of fiscal breaks and different contracts for young employees. Italy's overall jobless rate and youth unemployment edged up in April to the highest levels on record, data showed on Friday, with the youth jobless rate at 40.5 percent. Reducing unemployment in the midst of Italy's longest recession since World War Two is likely to be no easy task.

Convicted murderer Sloot eyes Peru marriage for 'love,' says lawyer

LIMA (Reuters) - Jailed murderer Joran van der Sloot plans to wed his Peruvian girlfriend for love, not to avoid extradition to the United States in connection with the disappearance of an Alabama teenager, his lawyer said on Saturday. Van der Sloot, a 25-year-old Dutch citizen, is serving 28 years in prison for killing Peruvian business student Stephany Flores, 21, in 2010 after meeting her playing poker in a Lima casino.

London police contain rival protests over soldier's killing

LONDON (Reuters) - Police intervened to separate about 150 far-right protesters from a much larger anti-racism crowd in London on Saturday to stop them from coming to blows over the killing of a British soldier on a busy street last week. A number of protests and counter-protests have taken place in the wake of the May 22 killing of Lee Rigby, a serving soldier and veteran of the war in Afghanistan, which the authorities are treating as a terrorist incident.

"Back in the days of the Netbook, a 10-inch device was crap, but now 10-inch devices is pretty much all you can get. What's available (and good) that's bigger than 10-inches?"

Well Anthony, there certainly are a few tablets for the meaty-handed out there, but the question of which one you should buy is less clear. After all, there's Archos' 11.6-inch 116 Platinum or Toshiba's 13-inch Excite 13, but if you're prepared to wait a while, Panasonic's forthcoming 20-inch 4K tablet and Viewsonic's rumored 22-inch unit. Of course, that's just a smattering of suggestions from us. This, after all, is Ask Engadget -- so let's open the question up to the floor and see what we can shake out together.

Michael Douglas: Oral sex caused throat cancer

In a surprisingly frank interview with the Guardian newspaper, actor Michael Douglas says that the throat cancer he was diagnosed with three years ago was caused by oral sex.

When asked by the Guardian if he regretted the years of smoking and drinking thought to be associated with his illness, the actor replied, "No. Because without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus."

Douglas, 68, went on to say in Sunday's story that he "did worry if the stress caused by my son's incarceration didn't help trigger it. But yeah, it's a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer. And if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it." Douglas has been married to actress Catherine Zeta-Jones since 2000.

A 2011 study detailed in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and covered here by NBC News, showed that a cancer spike, mainly in men, was tied to HPV from oral sex.

Douglas announced in August 2010 that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer, the most advanced stage, after numerous specialists failed to identify the source of his oral discomfort. A doctor in Montreal finally discovered a walnut-sized tumor at the base of the actor's tongue.

On Aug. 31, 2010, Douglas spoke with David Letterman on the "Late Show" after completing his first week of radiation and chemotherapy. He was blunt about his diagnosis, but hopeful about his chances for recovery.

"Did they find it early enough for their liking," Letterman asked, regarding the actor's doctors. "I sure as s--- hope so," Douglas said to applause. He has now been cancer-free for two years.

Douglas can currently be seen in the HBO biopic "Behind the Candelabra," in which he stars as famed entertainer Liberace.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) ? LinkedIn is joining the crowd of Internet services tying account security to mobile phones.

In a change announced Friday, the roughly 225 million users of LinkedIn Corp.'s online professional networking service can now choose to require a code to be sent to their phones whenever an attempt is made to log in to an account from a device for the first time.

The code sent to the phone is needed to complete the login process. The extra step is designed to lessen the chances of computer hackers breaking into user accounts.

Google Inc., Facebook Inc. Microsoft Corp. and Twitter are among other major companies to deploy this two-step verification process.

LinkedIn, based in Mountain View, Calif., had about 6 million user passwords stolen and posted on the Internet last year.

Bitter over her failure to be taken seriously, a fictional African-American writer whom Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie places in New York complains: "You can't write an honest novel about race in this country." Americanah is an attempt to do just that, with trenchant observations about social distinctions in not just one country, the United States, but Britain and Nigeria as well.

Adichie located her first two ? award-winning ? novels, "Purple Hibiscus" (2003) and "Half of a Yellow Sun" (2006), entirely within her native Nigeria. However, her third novel, set in three countries in three continents,?is an affirmation of literary globalization. Like "Open City" (2011), which Teju Cole, who also divides his time between the United States and Nigeria, set in New York, Brussels, and Lagos, Adichie defies the glib categories of nationality. Does she belong to American literature? Nigerian? "Americanah" is cosmopolitan fiction that seeks universal truths in the particulars of three distinct cultures.

The novel begins in Trenton, New Jersey, in a braiding salon where a young woman named Ifemelu has gone to get her hair done by African ?migr?es. After 13 years in the United States, she will soon fly back to Nigeria. Though the narrative returns to the salon from time to time, much of "Americanah" takes the form of extended flashbacks to Ifemelu's childhood in Nigeria and her experiences in the United States.

She moved to Philadelphia to study at a place called Wellson College, supporting herself through menial jobs she used a borrowed Social Security card to qualify for. After graduation, she lives with a rich white boyfriend in Baltimore and, after breaking up with him, an African-American professor in New Haven. A fellowship at Princeton brings her to the braiding salon in Trenton.

The novel also recounts the experiences of Ifemelu's high school sweetheart, Obinze, as he struggles to make a living in London and avoid deportation. He fails at both but, with the help of a crooked tycoon called Chief, becomes rich and respected back in Lagos. After about 400 pages of back-story, Adichie is ready to move Ifemulu out of the hair salon and back to Lagos, where the plot turns increasingly sudsy: Though Obinze has acquired a beautiful and supportive wife and a darling daughter, he and Ifemelu are still passionately in love. ??

In the United States, Ifemelu becomes an Internet celebrity by writing a popular blog called Raceteenth or Various Observations About American Blacks (Those Formerly Known as Negroes) by a Non-American Black. Though its stated focus is on what it calls the four kinds of American tribalism, "class, ideology, region, and race," for Ifemelu, the first of these is race. "I did not think of myself as black," she says, "and I only became black when I came to America."

As an outsider, an American African, Ifemelu ? and, through her, Adichie ? notices nuances in the relations between and within what the culture calls races that even African Americans take for granted. Back in Lagos, she becomes an "Americanah," a returnee who is more attentive to Nigerian mores than are friends who stayed behind. In London, Obinze experiences race differently, colored by English concern with class. At a posh party in Islington, a fellow Igbo observes, "It seemed to me that in America blacks and whites work together but don't play together, and here blacks and whites play together but don't work together."

"Americanah" is filled with such provocative aper?us and vivified by its awareness that not all people of African origin speak with the same voice ? though all share euphoria in the election of Barack Obama. It provides white American readers the privilege of eavesdropping on the conversations of Africans, African Americans, and African Britons of a variety of backgrounds and personalities. Ifemelu's encounters with tipping ("a forced and efficient bribing system"), American football ("just overweight men jumping on top of one another"), and depression ("We don't talk about things like depression in Nigeria") defamiliarize features of the American cultural landscape. When she hears sentences such as "You shouldn't of done that. There is three things. I had a apple. A couple days. I want to lay down," a reader might conclude, with Ifemelu: "These Americans cannot speak English."

Though Ifemelu dismisses "Huckleberry Finn" as "unreadable nonsense," she bonds with Obinze over James Hadley Chase's thrillers. Obinze does not share her enthusiasm for Graham Greene's 1948 novel "The Heart of the Matter," but she explains: "It's real literature, the kind of human story people will read in two hundred years." Not quite that kind of human story, "Americanah," which might have benefited from judicious pruning, will do for the next couple of years. It provides a long and soapy immersion in distinctive lives lived here and now.
