When friends create enemies: Facebook's mutual-friends feature may create security risks, privacy concerns

May 30, 2013 ? The mutual-friends feature on social networks such as Facebook, which displays users' shared friendships, might not be so "friendly."

Often revered for bringing people together, the mutual-friends feature on Facebook actually creates myriad security risks and privacy concerns according to a University of Pittsburgh study published in Computers & Security. The study demonstrates that even though users can tailor their privacy settings, hackers can still find private information through mutual-friends features.

"Oftentimes, mutual-friends features have not been created in tandem with privacy setting designs, and inadequate thought with regards to security and privacy issues has been given," said James Joshi, principal investigator of the study and associate professor of information assurance and security in Pitt's School of Information Sciences. "With such a huge user base in such systems, a minor privacy breach can have a significant impact."

Together with his colleagues -- Mohd Anwar, a former faculty member in Pitt's School of Information Sciences and now assistant professor at North Carolina A&T State University, and Lei Jin, a PhD candidate in Pitt's School of Information Sciences -- Joshi examined three different types of attacks on social network users using an offline Facebook dataset containing 63,731 users from the New Orleans regional network. This dataset (chosen because it was open to the public) also included more than a million friend links.

Using computer simulation programs, the researchers first demonstrated a "friend exposure" attack, exploring how many private friends an "attacker" could find of a specific target user. The attacks were tested on 10 randomly chosen user groups with sizes ranging between 500 and 5,000 individuals, as well as sample groups that were computer generated based on shared interests across user profiles. The same process was used for the "distant neighbor exposure attack," through which the attacker's goal was to identify private distant neighbors from the initial target. These distant neighbors indicate users that are friends of friends of the target user (two degrees of separation) or even friends of friends of friends of the target user (three degrees of separation).

Finally, the team initiated a "hybrid attack," in which an attacker tried to identify both the target's private friends and distant neighbors.

They found that an attacker identified more than 60 percent of a target's private friends in the "mutual-friend based attack." Likewise, an attacker could find, on average, 67 percent of a target's private distant neighbors by using 100 compromised user accounts.

"Being able to see mutual friends may allow one to find out important and private social connections of a targeted user," said Joshi. "An attacker can infer such information as political affiliations or private information that could be socially embarrassing. More importantly, the information that's gathered could be used, in combination with other background information about the targeted user, to create false identities that appear even more authentic than the actual user."

"It is important to understand all possible privacy threats to users of social networking sites so that appropriate mechanisms can be developed. This work of ours is an effort to comprehensively understand such threats related to the mutual-friend feature so that appropriate measures can be taken."

Joshi cites the need for better privacy-protection settings to mitigate the problem -- but those that can also be easily navigated by users.

The new Gmail sorts email into categories for you

Internet

In an attempt to aid you in the battle against email overload, Google has redesigned the Gmail inbox. Your email is automatically funneled into categories based on whether it's a message from a friend, a notification from a social network, a newsletter, a promotional email, a bill, and so on.

Wait! What exactly is happening to my Gmail inbox?
You will soon have the option ? yes, Google is giving you a choice ? to have your email sorted for you. The inbox will be split into up to five categories; you can choose to use some or all of the following:

  • Primary: Messages from friends, family and other individuals you seem to contact regularly (as well messages which don't fit into the other categories).
  • Social: Messages from social networks, dating services and so on. This is where you'll find the email telling you that someone commented on your Facebook status.
  • Promotions: Offers, deals and the like go into this category. This is where you'll find things like a Best Buy reminder about an upcoming sale.
  • Updates: This is where many of the boring but important things go. Think order confirmations, receipts, bills and statements.
  • Forums: Messages from online groups, discussion boards and mailing lists wind up in this category. It's where you'll discover that someone replied to your post on the secret Squirrel Fanclub forum.

These categories basically become tabs in your inbox, but you have the ability to move messages between categories or set filters in order to teach Gmail where you want certain things ? just in case it gets something wrong.

Google

Google

How well does this work?
In about a week of use, I've found that the new Gmail inbox is fairly reliable. It takes a bit of blind faith to actually trust the sorting process, but once your initial reservations are out of the way, things work fairly well.

I set up some filters to guarantee that a couple of items will land in specific categories and I've also moved some messages between categories. I've never had to tell Gmail something twice though ? it accommodated my sorting preferences after each adjustment.

Google

Google

The Gmail for Android and Gmail for iOS apps will get a fresh new look as well, thanks to the new inbox.

Will this make my life easier? Harder?
After my trial week, the new inbox seems to provide a better at-a-glance overview of my email pile than the old one did. I see all of my Primary mail, and I can see how many new messages are waiting behind the other four tabs. It's a lot easier to ignore stupid promotional emails, but then again, I decided to reroute certain items that were automatically dumped in the Updates tab, such as online order confirmations.

You may need to tweak your email workflow a little bit ? you'll have to peek into your different tabs, at least every so often ? and if you're already prone to sorting email using filters, you may have to tweak your settings, but not as much as you might fear. Overall, it's an improvement.

How do I get the new inbox?
Google is gradually rolling out the new Gmail inbox over the next few weeks. Just keep an eye on the little gear menu in Gmail and pick the "Configure Inbox" option once it appears in the settings.

Will I get it on my smartphone?
Yep! The Gmail for Android and Gmail for iOS apps will be receiving updates to enable the new inbox. They're available through Google Play and the Apple App Store, respectively.

Google is a bit quiet on what happens if you use Gmail on your phone's standard mail app, however. We hope to see incoming Gmail automatically sorted into corresponding folders.

What if I don't like this new inbox?
No worries! You can switch off all the categories and tabs at anytime in order to return to the "classic" Gmail inbox (or another one of the available inbox types, like the "Important" view).

Want more tech news or interesting links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on Twitter, subscribing to her Facebook posts, or circling her on Google+.

Cassini finds hints of activity at Saturn moon Dione

May 29, 2013 ? From a distance, most of the Saturnian moon Dione resembles a bland cueball. Thanks to close-up images of a 500-mile-long (800-kilometer-long) mountain on the moon from NASA's Cassini spacecraft, scientists have found more evidence for the idea that Dione was likely active in the past. It could still be active now.

"A picture is emerging that suggests Dione could be a fossil of the wondrous activity Cassini discovered spraying from Saturn's geyser moon Enceladus or perhaps a weaker copycat Enceladus," said Bonnie Buratti of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., who leads the Cassini science team that studies icy satellites. "There may turn out to be many more active worlds with water out there than we previously thought."

Other bodies in the solar system thought to have a subsurface ocean -- including Saturn's moons Enceladus and Titan and Jupiter's moon Europa -- are among the most geologically active worlds in our solar system. They have been intriguing targets for geologists and scientists looking for the building blocks of life elsewhere in the solar system. The presence of a subsurface ocean at Dione would boost the astrobiological potential of this once-boring iceball.

Hints of Dione's activity have recently come from Cassini, which has been exploring the Saturn system since 2004. The spacecraft's magnetometer has detected a faint particle stream coming from the moon, and images showed evidence for a possible liquid or slushy layer under its rock-hard ice crust. Other Cassini images have also revealed ancient, inactive fractures at Dione similar to those seen at Enceladus that currently spray water ice and organic particles.

The mountain examined in the latest paper -- published in March in the journal Icarus -- is called Janiculum Dorsa and ranges in height from about 0.6 to 1.2 miles (1 to 2 kilometers). The moon's crust appears to pucker under this mountain as much as about 0.3 mile (0.5 kilometer).

"The bending of the crust under Janiculum Dorsa suggests the icy crust was warm, and the best way to get that heat is if Dione had a subsurface ocean when the ridge formed," said Noah Hammond, the paper's lead author, who is based at Brown University, Providence, R.I.

Dione gets heated up by being stretched and squeezed as it gets closer to and farther from Saturn in its orbit. With an icy crust that can slide around independently of the moon's core, the gravitational pulls of Saturn get exaggerated and create 10 times more heat, Hammond explained. Other possible explanations, such as a local hotspot or a wild orbit, seemed unlikely.

Scientists are still trying to figure out why Enceladus became so active while Dione just seems to have sputtered along. Perhaps the tidal forces were stronger on Enceladus, or maybe the larger fraction of rock in the core of Enceladus provided more radioactive heating from heavy elements. In any case, liquid subsurface oceans seem to be common on these once-boring icy satellites, fueling the hope that other icy worlds soon to be explored -- like the dwarf planets Ceres and Pluto -- could have oceans underneath their crusts. NASA's Dawn and New Horizons missions reach those dwarf planets in 2015.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., a division of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. JPL designed, developed and assembled the Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras. The imaging team consists of scientists from the United States, England, France and Germany. The imaging operations center is based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo.

Hammond's work was funded through a NASA Outer Planets Research grant.

New ruthenium complexes target cancer cells without typical side effects, study suggests

May 28, 2013 ? A team of UT Arlington researchers has identified two ruthenium-based complexes they believe could pave the way for treatments that control cancer cell growth more effectively and are less toxic for patients than current chemotherapies.

Fred MacDonnell, professor of chemistry and biochemistry at The University of Texas at Arlington, has been researching a new generation of metal-based antitumor agents along with a team from the City of Hope Comprehensive Center Center in Duarte, Calif. Their aim is to find new therapies to complement widely used platinum-based therapies, such as cisplatin. Cisplatin is one of the most widely used anti-cancer drugs and shows remarkable effectiveness against some cancers, however it does not work on all cancers and can have severe side effects.

In a study published in the May edition of Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, the team describes two newly developed ruthenium polypyridyl complexes, or RPCs, that yielded results comparable to cisplatin against human non-small cell lung cancer cells in pre-clinical lab tests.

A graphic from MacDonnell's paper shows the growth of a control tumor compared to the growth of tumors treated with ruthenium-based complexes developed in the lab.

Unlike cisplatin, the RPCs were generally cleared from the body unchanged, without noticeable effects on metabolism or kidney function. In lab tests, healthy cells could withstand almost 10 times as much exposure to the team's ruthenium complexes as the cancer cells.

The study also found that the RPCs seemed to target cells in hypoxic states. Hypoxia, or low oxygen, is a signature of tumor cells.

"Cancer drugs on the market now generally are less effective under hypoxic conditions or insensitive to the oxygen concentration," MacDonnell said. "Since many tumor cells are under hypoxic stress and most normal cells are not, having something that becomes even more effective under hypoxia could have some real benefit to the patient."

The effectiveness of the RPCs tested seems to be associated with a particular portion of their structure. This portion, known as "tatpp" is redox-active, which means it is reduced when bound to DNA in the normal cellular environment. MacDonnell's team believe that this reduction step in the DNA bound compound sets in motion a biological process that triggers apoptosis, also known as programmed cell death, in cancer cells. Under hypoxic conditions, this reduction is more prevalent, leading to greater cell death in those cells.

"Being activated under low-oxygen conditions makes these unique complexes excellent candidates for use on some of the most difficult to treat tumors," said Dr. Sanjay Awasthi, professor of medical oncology and therapeutics research at City of Hope. "Now that we have demonstrated the role of the tatpp ligand in these biological processes, our team can continue toward the goal of using ruthenium-based complexes to enhance current treatments."

MacDonnell said the ruthenium complexes' increased effectiveness against malignant cells could be because the complexes can more easily enter cancer cells, which tend to be more metabolically active than normal cells. That hypothesis, however, is something the team will explore with further research.?

Besides MacDonnell and Awasthi, co-authors are: Abhishek Yadav, Thamara Janaratne, Adam S. Dayoub and Arthi Krishnan, of the UT Arlington chemistry/biochemistry department; Doyle H. Hawkins, of the UT Arlington math department; and Sharad S. Singhal and Sushma Yadav, of the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Vizio begins shipping 2013 M-Series Smart TVs, prices start at $400

Back at this year's CES, all Vizio said about its brand new M-Series lineup of HDTVs was that they'd be hitting shelves at some point "later this year." Fast forward to today, and the company's announcing its 2013 M-Series Smart TVs are now shipping to retailers such as Best Buy, Amazon and Walmart, with interested folks being able to grab one starting at $400 for a 32-inch LED model. Speaking of which, Vizio also went ahead and modified the M-Series pricing scheme a bit, making some models a little more expensive and others slightly cheaper. For example, the Theater 3D-ready 80-inch Razor LED Smart TV (say that five times fast) is now $4,000, as opposed to the $5,000 price tag that it was announced with originally. You'll find the full MSRP list in the PR after the break, and do let us know in the comments below if you plan on snagging one of these for yourself.

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) has approved a $1.6 million research award to the Children's Discovery and Innovation Institute at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA to study the use of videoconferencing technology to deliver behavioral health services to pediatric patients in community primary care settings.

Dr. Tumaini R. Coker, assistant professor of pediatrics at UCLA, will lead the research. The project will focus on the integration of developmental, behavioral, and mental health services into pediatric primary care using live videoconferencing technology. This study will examine whether using this telehealth technology can be an effective, efficient, and family-centered way to provide these integrated services to children in low-income communities.

"One of the key strengths of this project will be the emphasis on the partnership between UCLA researchers, the community clinics and the families to develop and test this strategy to bring behavioral health services into the primary care setting using live videoconferencing visits," said Coker.

The project brings together UCLA researchers from general pediatrics, developmental and behavioral pediatrics, child and adolescent psychiatry, the UCLA/RAND Prevention Research Center and the UCLA Center for Health Services and Society to work in partnership with a large multi-site community clinic consortium.

The study is part of a portfolio of patient-centered research that addresses PCORI's national research priorities and will provide patients with information that will help them make better informed decisions about their care.

"This project reflects PCORI's commitment to support patient-centered comparative effectiveness research, a new approach to health research that emphasizes the inclusion of patients and caregivers at all stages of the study process," added Dr. Joe Selby, executive director of PCORI. "The research will provide patients and those who care for them better information about the healthcare decisions they face."

The UCLA study is one of 51 projects totaling more than $88.5 million approved for funding by PCORI's Board of Governors on May 6. All were selected through a highly competitive review process in which scientists, patients, caregivers, and other stakeholders helped to evaluate more than 400 applications for funding. Proposals were evaluated on the basis of scientific merit, how well they engage patients and other stakeholders, their methodological rigor, and how well they fit within PCORI's national research priorities.

Attorney general signed off on Fox phone records subpoena: sources

By Mark Hosenball

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder personally approved a decision to subpoena Fox News telephone records as the Justice Department investigated an unauthorized leak regarding North Korea, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

The U.S. Justice Department did not mention the subpoena when it issued a statement on Friday describing how Holder had vetted a decision to seek a search warrant for the contents of an email account used by Fox News reporter James Rosen.

The revelation that Holder approved subpoenas that sought Fox News phone records shows that his involvement was broader than the Justice Department had earlier acknowledged publicly, as details continue to emerge in the controversy.

A Justice Department spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. However, current and former law enforcement officials said that under Justice Department procedures, the attorney general's approval is required before a subpoena is issued for journalists' records.

A second official confirmed that in the Fox News leak investigation, the government had issued subpoenas for "toll records for five phone numbers associated with the media."

Rosen reported in June 2009 that U.S. intelligence officials believed North Korea would conduct more nuclear tests in response to U.N. sanctions.

Stephen Kim, a former State Department analyst who was Rosen's alleged source, is scheduled to go on trial as soon as next year on charges that he violated an anti-espionage law. Rosen has not been charged.

The administration has also been under fire for a separate subpoena of Associated Press phone records as part of a different investigation of an alleged unauthorized leak.

Both incidents have sparked an outcry from journalists, but the Fox News case has proved more concerning to some because investigators described Rosen as a suspected "co-conspirator" in the leak of secret government information.

ACCUSED OF INTIMIDATION

Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes said in a statement on Thursday that the Obama administration was attempting to intimidate Fox News and its employees.

Another law enforcement official said that subpoenas issued for Fox News covered telephone records for two days during 2009. The official said that a certified letter and fax notifying the general counsel of News Corp, parent of Fox News, about the subpoenas was sent on August 27, 2010, the day Kim was indicted.

Authorities emailed Rosen at his work address with a similar notification, the official said. News Corp has said that it has found no record of such notifications, though it is not disputing government officials' accounts.

Mark Corallo, a Justice Department spokesman between 2002 and 2005, said that during his tenure, any request from any part of the Justice Department for the issuing of subpoenas against a news organization had to be submitted to his office for approval.

Corallo said that of "dozens" of requests from prosecutors for subpoenas directed against news organizations, he approved only one during his tenure.

President Barack Obama said last week that Holder would begin a review of Justice Department procedures related to media records. Holder, speaking to reporters on Tuesday, said he hopes to meet this week with media organizations about the review.

"We're going to have a real frank, good conversation about this," Holder said. "And I think we're going to make some changes. I'm not satisfied with where we are."

Obama, N.J. governor to reunite Tuesday for storm tour

By Jeff Mason

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will join New Jersey Governor Chris Christie on Tuesday for a tour of the Jersey Shore damaged by Superstorm Sandy, replaying a scene from last year that some observers believe helped Obama win re-election.

Christie, a Republican, gave Obama, a Democrat, blunt praise for his response to the devastating storm that hit the U.S. East Coast just days before the November 6 election.

"I cannot thank the president enough for his personal concern and his compassion," Christie said during an October 31 tour together of the damaged areas.

Though Christie supported the Republican presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, in the 2012 race, his compliments to the Democratic incumbent were seen as a boost to Obama.

The president could probably use the help again.

Obama has spent the last two weeks trying to get past a series of controversies over his administration's handling of the attacks in Benghazi, Libya, the targeting of journalists in leak probes, and the response to revelations that the Internal Revenue Service gave extra scrutiny to conservative-leaning groups.

This will be his second tour of a storm-battered area in as many days. On Sunday, Obama traveled to Oklahoma to view the damage from a tornado.

The president has sought to portray his administration as being quick and effective at responding to natural disasters, in contrast to his predecessor, George W. Bush, whose administration was widely criticized for its handling of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005.

The White House said Obama and Christie would view the recovery efforts from Sandy, including preparations by local businesses ahead of the important summer tourist season.

"The president ... will visit with families and business owners who have shown such resilience in the face of the destructive storm, highlight the extensive rebuilding efforts to date, and underscore his administration's ongoing commitment to stand with the impacted communities as the important work of recovery continues," the White House said.

Christie is a potential Republican candidate for president in 2016. After struggling with obesity for much of his adult life, Christie said earlier this month he underwent lap band surgery to lose weight.

Obama, a lanky exercise fanatic, cannot run for president again.

Logitech Harmony Ultimate

By Will Greenwald

Last year, Logitech's Harmony Touch universal remote control impressed us with a simple, elegant design, an easy setup process, and enough power to automate nearly any home theater activity with the press of its 2.4-inch color touch screen. Now, Logitech has one-upped itself with the Harmony Ultimate, a universal remote control system that takes all of the great parts of the Harmony Touch and adds even more power and features. At $349.99 (direct) it's pricier than the Harmony Touch and can be hard to justify if you don't have a very complicated home theater system, but its functionality and design still earn it our Editors' Choice and distinguish it as one of the best remote controls available.

Design
The Harmony Ultimate remote itself looks and feels almost identical to the Harmony Touch. It's still a conventionally shaped remote control centered around a large 2.4-inch touch screen flanked by large, simple buttons for playback, navigation, and volume/channel control. The controller has a matte, textured underside that feels both sturdy and secure in the hand, and its slim, curved profile is much more comfortable than many chunkier, rectangular remotes. It has a micro USB port hidden behind a rubber door on the bottom, and two metal contacts let it charge in the included cradle (which doesn't make a USB connection; you need to plug a cable directly into the remote to update it). If this were it, the Harmony Ultimate would be making a poor argument for its $100 premium over the Harmony Touch.

However, the remote is only part of the system. It comes with the Logitech Harmony Hub, a separate box that works with the remote to handle infrared repeating and Bluetooth. The infrared repeating is a handy feature that lets you control your devices without any line of sight. Place the hub near your home theater components and run the two included infrared blasters to other components nearby, and the remote can trigger the hub to blast out commands to all devices even if they're in a cabinet. The hub also adds Bluetooth functionality and support for the Harmony smartphone apps.

Bluetooth
Bluetooth support means the Harmony Ultimate controls not only your HDTV, Blu-ray player, and set-top box, but your game systems as well. A simple Bluetooth wizard guides you through pairing the remote with the Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii U, the former of which previously required an adapter to work with Harmony remotes and the latter of which has no specific remote support. You can't play games on either system, but the Bluetooth commands let you navigate certain menus and control media playback. That's great if your game system is your primary media hub, but perhaps not so great if you consider the Harmony Ultimate retails for at least as much as the game system itself.

Obama set to tour Oklahoma tornado response today

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As tornado victims are laid to rest in Moore, Okla., President Barack Obama is visiting Sunday to survey damage from Monday's storm.

The White House said Obama wanted a firsthand look at recovery from the monstrous EF5 tornado that barreled through the Oklahoma City suburb Monday afternoon. The president planned to visit with affected families and thank first responders in devastated Moore, a town of 41,000 residents about 10 miles from Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin said Sunday her message to Obama is that she appreciates the visit, but the state also needs quick action from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The Republican governor said so far, the agency has done a great job of speeding relief and cash assistance to affected families, but she's concerned about the long run.

"There's going to come a time when there's going to be a tremendous amount of need once we begin the debris clearing, which we already have, but really get it cleared off to where we need to start rebuilding these homes, rebuilding these businesses," she said on CBS' "Face the Nation." ''And we know at different times in the past, money hasn't come always as quickly as it should."

Obama offered prayers for residents from the White House in recent days and has promised to support the rebuilding for as long as it takes. "They have suffered mightily this week," Obama said Wednesday. "And while the road ahead will be long, their country will be with them every single step of the way."

Among the dead were 10 children, including two sisters pulled by the strong winds out of their mother's grasp, an infant who died along with his mother trying to ride out the storm in a convenience store and seven students at Plaza Towers Elementary School. Many students were pulled from the rubble after the school was destroyed.

Fallin noted that some 100 other schools in Oklahoma have safe rooms for children to seek shelter in tornados.

"Schools that have been lost in the past, many of them have rebuilt rooms of some sort as a safe room in their school, and we're certainly going to encourage that," she said.

"Any death is very unfortunate, but it's truly incredible that we had only 24 deaths at this site, because if you look at all the debris field and how wide it is, I don't know how anybody survived this tornado," she said on CBS.

Chuck Hagel to West Point Cadets: Sexual Assault Is a 'Profound Betrayal'

Speaking at the commencement ceremony at the United States Military Academy at West Point, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told cadets that sexual harassment and sexual assault in the military are a "profound betrayal" and charged them with the responsibility to stamp out the sexual assault problem plaguing the military.

"You will need to not just deal with these debilitating, insidious and destructive forces but rather you must be the generation of leaders that stops it. This will require your complete commitment to building a culture of respect and dignity for every member of the military and society," Hagel said as he delivered the commencement address at West Point. "Sexual harassment and sexual assault in the military are a profound betrayal, a profound betrayal of sacred oaths and sacred trusts. This scourge must be stamped out."

"We are all accountable and responsible for ensuring that this happens. We cannot fail the Army or America. We cannot fail each other, and we cannot fail the men and women that we lead," he said.

Hagel's remarks at the esteemed military academy came during the same week as a U.S. Army sergeant was accused of secretly taking dozens of photos and videotaping naked female West Point cadets over five years.

President Obama addressed the issue of sexual assault in his speech at the commencement ceremonies for the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Friday, telling the graduates that there is "no place" for sexual assaults in the military.

"We must acknowledge that even here, even in our military, we've seen how the misconduct of some can have effects that ripple far and wide," Obama said at the Naval Academy commencement ceremony Friday. "Those who commit sexual assault are not only committing a crime, they threaten the trust and discipline that make our military strong. That's why we have to be determined to stop these crimes, because they've got no place in the greatest military on Earth."

Over the past month, the military has dealt with a number of sexual assault scandals, causing military leaders and the president to speak out against the problem.

Earlier this month, the lieutenant colonel in charge of the Air Force's Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office was arrested for alleged sexual battery, and the Army announced that the coordinator of a sexual assault prevention program at Fort Hood, Texas, was under investigation "for pandering, abusive sexual contact, assault and maltreatment of subordinates."

The Pentagon reported this month that 26,000 sexual assaults occurred in the military in 2012, a 37 percent increase since last year.

The figure, coupled with the recent sexual assault cases involving those charged with leading programs to prevent such incidents, led Hagel to order the retraining, re-credentialing and re-screening of all sexual assault prevention coordinators and military recruiters.

Several members of Congress have proposed legislation aiming to stop the sexual assaults occurring in the military.

Earlier this month, a bi-partisan group of lawmakers introduced a bill which would take the prosecution of sexual assaults in the military out of the chain of command, preventing commanders from handling the cases of their subordinates.

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Abel Trujilo scuffled at the UFC 160 weigh-ins, and Mike Tyson loved it

During the UFC 160 weigh-ins, Khabib Nurmagomedov blew weight, wore a wig, started a fight and made Mike Tyson laugh. He had a full day.

Nurmagomedov weighed in at 158.5 for his lightweight bout with Abel Trujilo. He will forfeit 20 percent of his purse, so maybe that's why he was angry when he faced off with Trujilo. He got in his opponent's face, first bumping Trujilo's head and then pushing him back. He was quickly escorted off stage by the UFC's Burt Watson.

The best part of the scuffle? Mike Tyson was on stage and loved every minute of it. Look in the upper right-hand corner of the video to see his reaction.

Renan Barao, John Cholish and Cain Velasquez: See where they fell on Cagewriter?s Hot or Not list

As another week of MMA comes to a close, let's take a look at what was hot and what was not so hot.

Hot -- Bryan Pedersen: Many legislators have talked about the economic benefits of MMA when the sport is legalized. Few have gone the extra mile to find out what it feels like to be in a cage to fight. Pedersen will do that in Cheyenne, Wyo., this weekend. No matter the result, it's admirable that he has even gone the distance to train and join the first fights to take place in Wyoming's capitol.

Not -- Renan Barao: The interim bantamweight men's champ was injured and had to pull out of his main event bout with Eddie Wineland at UFC 161. Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans' fight is now the main event, and Roy Nelson vs. Stipe Miocic was added.

Hot -- John Cholish: After losing to Gleison Tibau at UFC on FX 8, Cholish decided to hang up his fighting gloves. Before he left, he decided to give his fight purse to Oklahoma tornado survivors.

Kudos to Cholish.

Not -- Brett Atchley: The manager who specializes in female fighters has been accused of bad behavior by several fighters separately. His alleged improprieties include accosting fighters, telling them he would "blackball them" from Invicta though president Shannon Knapp has denied anyone has the power to do this, and sharing the confidential details of a client's contract. His response?

"It's really easy for women to play the victim, especially when they make their mind up that they're going to do it. Because everyone will believe them," Atchley said to MMA Junkie.

Stereotyping women is not a smart thing to do, particularly by someone who makes his living off of them.

Still taking temperature -- Cain Velasquez: He lost the UFC heavyweight championship belt once, and managed to get it back. Will he defend it on Saturday night against Antonio Silva at UFC 160?

Thanks for reading Cagewriter this week. Check us out on Twitter and Facebook for bonus UFC 160 coverage.

(AP) ? Boston or the New York Rangers? To be honest, Ottawa's Daniel Alfredsson doesn't think it matters who the Pittsburgh Penguins face in the Eastern Conference finals.

At the moment, Alfredsson believes the Penguins are a cut above.

"I think they would be the favorite to play either of those two teams," Alfredsson said. "They have skill, speed, they're well-coached and a lot of experience as well. So they're going to be a tough team to beat."

Certainly too tough for the Senators.

James Neal recorded his first playoff hat trick and Pittsburgh reached the conference finals for the first time since 2009 with a 6-2 dismantling of Ottawa on Friday night, winning the best-of-seven series in five games.

The Penguins improved to 8-3 in the postseason. Eight more wins and they'll hoist the Cup for the fourth time in franchise history.

"The further you go, the tougher it gets," Penguins defenseman Doug Murray said. "Every player starts smelling the end result."

Certainly it's wafting through the Pittsburgh dressing room after the Penguins dominated one of the NHL's best defensive teams, rolling up 22 goals in five games, including 12 in the last five periods.

"We got to our game a lot," Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby said. "The depth we showed, different guys chipping in. The whole way through we didn't have many lulls where we lost momentum at any point."

Kris Letang, Evgeni Malkin and Brenden Morrow also scored, and Tomas Vokoun made 29 saves as top-seeded Pittsburgh ended Ottawa's season for the third time in five years.

Milan Michalek and Kyle Turris scored for the Senators. Craig Anderson stopped 27 shots, but Ottawa simply couldn't keep up.

"I hope (the Penguins) don't bill us for the clinic," Senators coach Paul MacLean said. "But they really showed the step you have to take to continue to play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs."

The Penguins expected desperation from a team trying to extend its season for at least another 48 hours. Instead, the Senators offered only resignation.

Outskated, outshot and outworked from the opening faceoff, Ottawa put up little resistance.

"We gave them too many freebie chances and you're not going to beat a team like that when they get as many chances as they had," Senators forward Jason Spezza said.

The series win was the seventh for the Penguins under coach Dan Bylsma but the first deciding victory to come on home ice. Pittsburgh had gone 0-6 at home in potential series enders, something Bylsma's players insisted was an anomaly.

Pittsburgh made sure a trip to Canada for Game 6 wouldn't be necessary, turning Alfredsson into a prophet of sorts. The NHL's longest-tenured captain said the Senators "probably" couldn't rally to win the series after a 7-3 home loss in Game 4 on Wednesday night.

Alfredsson clarified his remarks Thursday, insisting his team still had a chance, but it didn't take long Friday night for slim to turn into none.

"We weren't able to slow them down," Alfredsson said.

Sluggish from the opening faceoff, the Senators slogged through the game's first 10 minutes, long enough for Morrow to pay immediate dividends in his return to the lineup.

The veteran forward was scratched from Game 4 in favor of rookie Beau Bennett but appeared re-energized after the night off. He got his second goal of the playoffs 6:25 into the first period, scoring the type of goal the Penguins expected when they acquired the 34-year-old from Dallas just before the trade deadline.

Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke beat a Senator to a loose puck along the halfboards then zipped a cross-ice pass to defenseman Mark Eaton. Morrow skated to the net and lifted his stick up to draw Eaton's attention. Eaton patiently waited for Morrow to get in front of the crease before throwing a puck toward the net that deflected off Morrow's skate and into the net.

The goal was held up on review and the Senators found themselves in familiar position: trailing.

Ottawa came into the game having led for just 17 minutes in regulation during the entire series, all in Game 4 before Pittsburgh buried the Senators with a four-goal outburst in the third period.

This time, the deluge came a little earlier.

Neal scored for the third time in two games when he poked in an idle rebound on the power play to put Pittsburgh up 2-0 7:38 into the second period. Letang followed with a wrist shot over Anderson's glove at the end of a 3-on-2 break to make it 3-0.

Michalek briefly made it competitive with a beautiful deke around Vokoun to pull the Senators to 3-1 with 3:48 left in the second but Malkin scored his fourth goal of the playoffs on a breakaway just before the intermission to restore the three-goal lead.

Ottawa hadn't overcome a deficit bigger than one goal in the postseason and Neal ensured there would be no meltdown by the Penguins. A pair of sizzling wrist shots in the third period gave him his first career playoff hat trick and sent the Penguins roaring into hockey's final four.

NOTES: Pittsburgh went 1 for 3 on the power play and improved to 6-0 when it outscores an opponent on special teams in the postseason. ... Ottawa is 0-6 in franchise history when it falls behind 3-1 in a series.

Modulating the immune system to combat metastatic cancer

May 24, 2013 ? Cancer cells spread and grow by avoiding detection and destruction by the immune system. Stimulation of the immune system can help to eliminate cancer cells; however, there are many factors that cause the immune system to ignore cancer cells. Regulatory T cells are immune cells that function to suppress the immune system response.

In this issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, researchers led by Ronald Levy at Stanford University found that regulatory T cells that infiltrate tumors express proteins that can be targeted with therapeutic antibodies.

Mice injected with antibodies targeting the proteins CTLA-4 and OX-40 had smaller tumors and improved survival. Moreover, treatment with these antibodies cleared both tumors at the primary site and distant metastases, including brain metastases that are usually difficult to treat. These findings suggest that therapies targeting regulatory T cells could be a promising approach in cancer treatment.

In an accompanying commentary, Cristina Ghirelli and Thorsten Hagemann emphasize that in order for this approach to be clinically relevant, it will be important to show that targeting regulatory T cells in metastatic tumors also blocks growth.

Treatment for Substance Abuse - Mental Health - Fitness Through ...

You have a lot? of valid points! Have you thought of being an advocate or counselor yourself? Sounds like you have made a lot of strides and your children have helped you get on the road to recovery. Congratulations!

That is so true. There are so many morons in AA that won?t shut? their mouths.

Aside from the economy, there?s no greater problem these days than substance addiction. Drug excessive drinking increases risk for suicide. Persons who be depressed are in especially high-risk for drug abuse and suicide. Even though the increase of addiction rates is really a? national concern, each individual can perform something to fight the popularity.

If you, your family member, friend or anyone you know is suffering from drugs or alcohol addiction tell them to call? 877-918-9776 ,they helped me in leaving drugs, share it everywhere to help people? US only

Brilliant effort lad? & I can`t praise you enough, you need to sort those American teeth out though & soon! A Million Little Pieces.

I?m happy for you? man. I had horrible drug problems and it finally took me replacing all my friends, getting away from my family, taking time off work, and not listening to my doctors. After I got free from stress it was as though the burden was just lifted and I was able to recover from 5 years of alcahol and narcotic abuse. Power to ya! Keep it up. And don?t let people take your pride from you, that?s what stopped me from getting clean for years.

Comments? are welcome :-) Please post a thought after viewing.

It?s a good thing that you found an outlet to get your feelings out and you have your children who in a way are your Higher Power ? think about that ? may be dangerous but maybe not? I definitely wanted to get clean for my boys and my counselor said well that is for you ? you are doing it? for you and your children and that is the same as doing it for yourself!
