While searching for a treatment for tinnitus it is often a good idea to know the possible causes of tinnitus. While I had been doing research to uncover some possible causes of tinnitus I was surprised to find out that tinnitus is not a disease but rather a symptom of what?s called Meniere?s Syndrome. Meniere?s disease is actually a disorder of the inner ear. As one would assume your hearing and equilibrium can be affected to some degree. Some people have symptoms which are mildly annoying while other individuals are disabled from the symptoms of tinnitus. When conducting a health related survey with the 55 to 65 year old age group about twenty percent of this group said that they were tinnitus sufferers.

Hearing loss is one of the major symptoms of tinnitus and is believed to be the leading cause of tinnitus. As we get older we naturally do lose some of our hearing but younger people who suffer from hearing loss have probably been exposed to loud noise thus the loud noise exposure would be the major cause of tinnitus for them.

Most people recognize that one of the causes of hearing loss and tinnitus is exposure to prolonged excessive noise. Many people who played in bands in the past today suffer with hearing loss and the symptoms of tinnitus. Nowadays when you watch musicians perform the majority of them are wearing some form of ear protection.

Individuals that work in factories are likewise at risk of tinnitus. The constant noise and hum of the machinery is another major cause of tinnitus. At one time hearing protection was provided to all workers, now not only is it available but it is also a requirement to use it.

One more cause of tinnitus which I found intriguing is the use of Q-tips. Q-Tips can easily traumatize the ear canal plus trigger secondary ear infections. When using a Q-tip you might inadvertently push wax toward the eardrum and then it will become more difficult to remove. So as one?s smart grandmother once mentioned do not put anything smaller than an elbow within your ear.

Although not a direct cause of tinnitus, tinnitus is linked to fatigue, stress, sleep problems, depression and irritability. Also abnormal bone growth in the ear can be an additional cause of tinnitus as well as an earwax blockage within the ear.

Other less common causes of tinnitus can be blood vessel disorders such as ones caused from head and neck tumors or caused from the accumulation of cholesterol in the blood vessels.

Now if you have never been exposed to loud noises and have never misused Q-tips an alternative cause of tinnitus could be as a result of medications that you are currently taking. Medications used in treating cancer plus the medication chloroquine used in the treatment of malaria can be a cause of . Also a number of antibiotics, aspirin not to mention diuretics can also be found to be a cause of tinnitus.

Most individuals usually associate the main cause of tinnitus with being exposed to loud noises but as you will find the causes of tinnitus are many.
