Boston College coach Steve Addazio has some work to do if his team is going to reach .500 this season. (The Associated Press)
For the rest of the week, we'll look at what we learned about each of the ACC schools at media days and what we still need to find out. First up is Boston College.
By Patrick Stevens
NEED TO KNOW (from media day)
- New coach Steve Addazio might not turn around the Eagles overnight, but he didn't waste time upon arriving in December and starting to nudge things in the right direction.
It started from the first workout the former Temple coach witnessed in his new capacity.
"I saw some guys who didn't dress right, had ripped shirts, their hands were behind the line," Addazio said. "I pulled them over and I told them that will never, ever happen again. I walked in the locker room and there was stuff on the floor. That's never happened again. It started that day and it's never subsided."
- Addazio is optimistic about the Eagles' running game, particularly with what he inherited up front.
"I think we have a good offensive line," Addazio said. "We're going to develop and get big and strong. We have a strong, powerful back in Andre Williams. We have to keep him healthy because we don't have another one."
WANT TO KNOW (in the next few months)
- Is a bowl game within reach? Quite possibly not. The state of the Eagles' program in the wake of the four years of diminishing returns seen under former coach Frank Spaziani was woeful, and coach Steve Addazio has some work to do secure a .500 season in the ACC's New England outpost.
- Is there immediate hope for the defensive line? It wasn't long ago Boston College's rugged defensive front was one of the proudest units in the ACC. Last year, the Eagles ranked dead-last nationally in sacks and tackles for loss and 115th (out of 120 teams) in rush defense. This is a good place to begin a rebuild.
- Just what will BC's offense look like? The Eagles' revolving door at offensive coordinator over the last half-decade has ensured Chase Rettig is more experienced than just about any quarterback at learning new systems. But will the new staff adjust to the strengths of Rettig and other veterans (like receiver Alex Amidon) or simply implement a preferred system. Of note (though not necessarily of relevance): Both of Addazio's Temple teams ranked 116th nationally in passing.
IMPORTANT DATES
- Season opener: Aug. 31 vs. Villanova
- Faces Syracuse: Nov. 30 at the Carrier Dome
