The Secrets of Effective Time Management | learn in ireland

We are all born procrastinators. Usually a small dose of procrastination is harmless. For some this can be the difference between a productive work day and not getting the right things done in a work day. If this is the type of person you are it?s most likely as easy as fixing your time management skills. Luckily, time management is a skill that anybody can develop. You only need to put some effort into it and don?t allow yourself to get distracted. Increase your productivity and focus with these helpful tips.

Write out a simple list of goals you set for yourself. You can type them out into a word document if you like, but you should hand write them on a piece of paper and keep that piece of paper somewhere close by. Having this list makes it possible for you to look at it from anywhere if you feel like your focus is fading. You will be more likely to spend less time browsing the internet or staring off into space if you have a focused list to guide you. You taking the time to write out your goals will help you feel as though they are more concrete than a word document that can easily be erased at will. Goals don?t have to be monsterous, in fact they can be as small as you need them to be. So why not write them down. By taking one big job and dividing it into several easier ones, you can often manage your time more efficiently. When you do this, large projects are not so intimidating, as you can work at them in stages. If you plan far enough in advance you can even work on that project over several days, which will help keep it fresh and interesting. Most people have a tendency to avoid large tasks, procrastinating until the very last minute. This is because the job is so large it confuses or frightens us. When the large project has been divided into smaller parts, it no longer seems unmanageable, and you can start to work on it.

Make sure you get a reward for doing a good job! Allow yourself a break, and something you enjoy, if you get everything done on time. Having something pleasurable awaiting us will make us work harder. Come up with a reward that?s appropriate for you. The type of reward that will work best will depend on what motivate you to do your best. This gives you a pleasurable goal to strive for, aside from just completing the job. When there is no reward, there is little drive to keep drudging away at your day to day schedule. A reward adds the element of fun to your work. Having fun actually helps you manage your time better.

Anyone who puts their mind to it can improve in the time management department. If you keep the above guidelines in mind, you will find that you can quickly develop abilities in this area.

You can get better at time management by planning your day realistically and then staying focused on each task you work on. The more you work at it, the better at it you will be.

?Click it or Ticket? Applies To Pets As Well [AUDIO]

The warmer weather means more time to spend with your furry friend, but the Department of Motor Vehicles and New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals reminds you that in addition to buckling up, your pets need to be secured when you?re behind the wheel.

The MVC is partnering with the SPCA to remind vehicle owners that the famous ?click it or ticket? policy doesn?t just apply to humans, but also to any unrestrained pets. MVC Chairman Ray Martinez says that your dog or cat (or any other animal for that matter) shouldn?t be riding on the lap of the driver and they shouldn?t be left un restrained on a seat.

?What happens to a dog is the same thing that would happen to a person. If there is an accident that pet goes flying and becomes a projectile.?

He notes that while having a puppy or kitten on your lap might look cute, it actually is putting both the animal and the person at a significant risk.

?In the event the driver has to react very quickly they are going to be distracted by that pet. Also if that pet is roaming around freely in the vehicle that is a distraction for the driver but it?s also very unsafe for the pet itself.?

In New Jersey if the SPCA catches a driver improperly driving with an animal the vehicle operator could face big trouble. Fines run from 250 dollars to 1000 dollars for each offense, in addition police officers who stop drivers can also right those tickets and the driver can be charged with a Disorderly Person?s offense under the state?s Animal Cruelty Statute.

When it comes to properly securing your pooch (or kitten), Martinez says the first thing to make sure is to avoid the front seat ?where they can easily be a distraction.?

?Our concern here at Motor Vehicles is the driver should be focused on driving when they?re in the vehicle. Not on keeping a dog on their lap, not on having the dog in the passenger seat.?

Ideally he says the animal will be in the back seat, and properly restrained with a commercial car restraint for pets.

?There are restraints, buckles if you will, that are sold at most pet stores and they range in price from 15 dollars up to 100 dollars I?m sure. They?re for every size of dog, and that?s for the safety of the dog. ?

Martinez notes that Triple A recently conducted a Survey which asked about whether driver?s drove with their pets unsecured.

?20% of those asked admitted to letting their dog sit on their lap when they drove, and an even greater percentage admitted to being distracted was sitting up in the front seat with them.?

He reminds though the image of a dog having its head out the window, even in the backseat, could be cute, it?s incredibly dangerous for the pooch.

?If you have to do a quick stop or you?re involved in an accident that could be lethal for that dog. It might look cute, and the dog might seem to enjoy it, but it?s not good practice.?

Martinez asks anyone who sees any kind of maltreatment of pets to contact the SPCA at 1800 582 5979.

What next for Romney? Undercut Obama, raise money

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? What's next for Mitt Romney? The Republican presidential nomination finally in hand, he will spend the next three months trying to undercut President Barack Obama on the economy while portraying himself as Mr. Fix It for a nation with stubbornly and painfully high unemployment.

Romney also faces key decisions between now and his acceptance of the party's nomination in late August in Florida: Where should he compete most aggressively? Who should be his running mate?

At the same time, he must dive anew into fundraising and work to win over voters who are distracted by their own summer plans and day-to-day pocketbook worries ? while withstanding Obama's attacks on his own claims as a jobs creator.

Not that Romney is publicly sweating the hurdles that come with being the little-known challenger to a personally popular president.

"People will get to know me better," Romney told Fox News in an interview that aired Wednesday, the day after he sealed the GOP nomination with his primary election victory in Texas. He says the general election campaign is only beginning even though his chief challenger dropped out more than six weeks ago.

With a smile, he said of the voters, "My guess is they're going to get to know more about me than they'd like to by the time we're finished."

As if on cue, Obama's campaign opened a fresh critique of the GOP nominee-in-waiting, assailing his economic record as governor of Massachusetts. It's the second phase of an effort by Obama to define Romney negatively in voters' eyes. The Democrat already has spent weeks hammering the Republican on his record at the private equity company he founded.

Obama himself made a courtesy call to Romney to congratulate him on his nomination victory. An Obama aide said the president told Romney in a brief and cordial chat that he looked forward to debating America's future with him.

Romney spent the day in California, plunging into a week filled with fundraisers and efforts to unite Republicans after a divisive primary season. Already he's proven adept at both, hauling in enough cash to cut into the advantage that Obama has while getting most of his former Republican rivals to close ranks around him.

Those efforts ? and the turning of his primary campaign into a general election operation ? have been his prime focus. He's making only a handful of public appearances for now, but aides say they expect the campaign to ramp up to a full sprint by July 4. Romney has said he plans to take a week off around the holiday, suggesting that may be the time when he makes final deliberations on whom to choose as his vice presidential nominee.

Little is known about just where in that process Romney may be, though there is no shortage of Republican rising stars informally auditioning for the role.

While work on that front is certainly going on behind the scenes, Romney's aides are spending this week publicly pressing anew a criticism that the candidate himself has been making for months against Obama. They're highlighting the hundreds of millions of dollars in economic stimulus money that the administration provided to Solyndra, the solar-energy company that went bankrupt and whose executives had contributed to Obama's campaign.

It is a sign of the overarching argument Romney will make against Obama in the coming weeks: that Obama's economic efforts have been politically motivated, have wasted taxpayer dollars and, ultimately, have failed.

The renewed Solyndra criticism is also an attempt to answer Obama's recent criticism ? in speeches and advertisements ? of Romney's tenure at the helm of Bain Capital. Obama has argued that Romney's time as a private equity executive before entering politics ? the basis for his campaign's claim that he's best suited to lead an economic recovery ? was aimed at enriching shareholders, not serving the public.

Romney largely survived that opening salvo, judging by early polls and interviews with both Republicans and Democrats.

National surveys show Obama either statistically tied with Romney or only slightly ahead of him. And polls in the most hotly contested states show Romney competitive with Obama.

"They haven't worked," GOP strategist Charlie Black, an informal Romney adviser, said of the Bain criticisms. "People are worried about the economy and jobs."

Democratic strategist Steve Elmendorf said too few voters had heard the argument.

"The reality is it's June," said Elmendorf. "To say the Bain argument has worked or not is ridiculously premature."

A handful of swing-voting states will be the most hard fought as Obama and Romney aggressively build get-out-the-vote organizations and air a flood of advertisements in their efforts to reach the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the White House.

Across the country, Romney's campaign is going through growing pains as it seeks to turn a stripped-down primary operation into a full-scale general election campaign. Aides say offices will open and more staff will join the team, but they also say they don't anticipate being able to match the staffing levels of Obama, who has had teams in place for months in states like Florida and Ohio. The Republican National Committee also is in the midst of boosting its staffing to help Romney.

Already, Obama's and Romney's campaigns, as well as super PACs supporting and opposing each, have spent more than $80 million in advertising on the general election campaign through the month of June, according to ad-tracking reports provided to The Associated Press by Smart Media Group of Alexandria, Va.

Of that, Obama's campaign has spent $31 million-plus on TV ads in about 10 states. He's been on the air most heavily in Florida, Iowa, Ohio and Virginia, an indication of where his team may think the race will be won or lost. A Democratic-leaning super PAC also has been on the air to help him, though it's spent only about $6.3 million.

Romney himself has run ads in just five battleground states: Iowa, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia. But he's been significantly helped by pro-Romney outside groups, who have been on the air in several others ? most heavily in Florida, Ohio and Virginia.

Even so, Republican outfits, including Romney's campaign and supporting super PACS, have combined to spend about as much as Obama and his allies. And in the coming weeks, Romney plans to focus heavily on fundraising so that he'll be able to make strategic decisions about where to devote most of it state by state.

To that end, Romney is spending the week courting donors in California, starting Wednesday in Fresno, Bakersfield and in Hillsborough, a wealthy enclave just outside San Francisco.

He planned major fundraising events Thursday, Friday and Saturday in southern California. On Tuesday, Romney was in Las Vegas wooing Sheldon Adelson, the primary financing source of a group that backed Newt Gingrich's failed primary campaign. And Romney also attended a fundraiser hosted by Donald Trump.

Adventures In Entertaining | Tales and Tails

Bunny here at the keyboard, sharing our Saturday adventure with you.

Every year on Saturday before Memorial Day, the Roanoke Days festival wraps up. ?Saturday at noon, there?s a parade of the old-fashioned sort that Dad?s family really likes. ?They like it so much that they invite themselves to come over whether we?re having a party or not. ?Even though the grill is broken, Mom and Dad decided to have the party anyway. ?Fortunately, Crazy Aunt J (Mom?s sister, not Dad?s) volunteered the use of her grill, so the food was on after all.

Carousel HorseThe day of the parade was supposed to be really hot. ?I think it?s the hottest parade day we?ve ever had since we lived here. ?Mom and Dad made plans for us to stay in the basement in comfort while the parade was going on. ?I had my snazzy pink Thundershirt to wear, too, since they like to blare their sirens and drums sometimes. ?Kuster and Morgan both had their crates downstairs and when people started arriving, Mom took Blue and I downstairs with our beds and left the television on so we could watch something while the humans were outside. ?Dad had some SAR training that morning, so Mom was the only one home with us, at least until Dad could get home from his class.

The StageMom hadn?t realized that people were at the house, because they were hanging out outside and she was finishing getting ready inside. ?When she realized people were here, she hurried Blue and me downstairs and rushed to take the stuff outside to the table. ?As she went out, she pulled the last outside door closed behind her so the cold air wouldn?t go outside so much.

The MidwayShe went to the front to talk with the family and Stepgranny asked her if she could put the fruit salad in the refrigerator. ?Mom went to get it and take it inside and realized that everyone was locked out of the house. ?She called Dad, just before the parade was starting, and he said he was just leaving training. ?Mom had a bad feeling about him getting there to see any of the parade with us, and she reminded him to hurry up. ?Sadly, this meant that I have no pictures from the parade to show you, since the camera was locked inside with us.

The Ferris WheelDown in the basement, I had no worries whatsoever. ?I didn?t know we were locked in and I had Morgan and Kuster to keep me safe, along with my snazzy pink shirt and a comfortable couch. ?As far as I?m concerned, that is the way to enjoy the parade. ?Let the humans sit out there catching candy and sweat.

Just as the parade was getting to the end, Grandpa and Grandma along with Dad?s three youngest brothers, arrived. ?A little bit after that, Dad arrived. ?He unlocked the door and there was a stampede of humans trying to get to the bathroom. ?I was glad I was downstairs for that, although it did get Kuster and Morgan pretty fired up. ?I could have done without the Shepherd Symphony in stereo.

Finally, the humans got the hot dogs on the grill and the party was finally getting started. ?Dad took Kuster upstairs to visit for a while and he promptly went to work on charming Grandma into giving him some food. ?He was working the crowd pretty hard.

I sent Mom up through the festival to get some pictures so you could see a little what it?s like, since I couldn?t go through it myself. ?We found it funny that they put up their rude orange ?No bikes, No skateboards, No animals of any kind? signs along a street where five of the eight houses that we know of all have dogs that live there, and our county is the capitol for feral cats. ?But I?m getting off the subject. ?I sent Mom to do a little shopping a picture-taking, and then she came home.

Kuster Makes His MoveAfter Mom came back, a lot of the humans were leaving. ?Tractor Guy and Peanut?s family had a wedding to go to. ?Hot Dog and Favorite Niece?s family had a graduation party to go to. ?Even Number Nine was at a graduation party for a classmate and had to be picked up. ?So, it was time for the most important part of the party, which was my big appearance.

Blueberry Makes An AppearanceI went out in the heat to greet my company and enjoyed seeing them immensely. Grandma couldn?t resist feeding me potato chips and being a good hostess, I had to oblige. ?I mean, really, it would have been rude not to. ?After a few minutes, Blueberry came out to join us, too. ?We charmed the guests as best we could until we just couldn?t take the heat anymore and Dad brought us inside. ?The rest of our guests had to leave at that point, anyway.

And Potato Chips Will Fall From the SkyIt was a shorter party than usual, but it was a lot of fun. ?The best part was that Dad cooked some hot dogs on the grill just for us, which we enjoyed for dinner and for breakfast on Sunday. ?Just call me the hostess with the mostest! ?We?ll see everyone back in July for our fireworks party.

    97% Monsieur Lazhar

After Fran?ois Hollande?s victory in the last French presidential elections, Algerian flags have been seen in the Place de la Bastille. Not really surprising. Thousands of Algerians immigrate to France every year. An old French colony, Algeria is the second largest francophone country in the world. Although not an impressive number, approximately 50,000 people of Algerian origin reside in Canada today. The country is known for welcoming immigration, but you go a bit further and you discover that, differently for what is jokily said, they don?t beg people to live there, unless you fill in certain requirements. "Monsieur Lazhar" tells not only the story of an Algerian immigrant struggling to get political asylium in Canada, but the story of a multicutural and young country discovering its own identity and, consequently, its own limits and weaknesses. How many immigrants couldn?t repeat Alice?s words? "My school is beautiful. Maybe not the most beautiful, but it's mine. So...At first, when I started coming here, my mom kept saying how nice it was.Personally, I found it ok... But now, six years later, I also think it's really nice. Because it's mine. A big yard to play soccer and basketball, where parents drop their kids off in the morning. They take care of us, check to see if we have lice, how our teeth are, if we're aggressive or hyperactive. But this nice school is where Martine Lachance hanged herself. With her blue scarf from the big pipe on a Wednesday night. (...) Martine must've been discouraged with her life. The last thing she did was kick her chair to make it fall over. Sometimes I wonder if she wasn't sending a violent message." The anguish of relocation is algo the anguish of the kids having to deal with their teacher?s death. While some people fight for life, others give up without explanation. Here we have the opposition between Martine and Lazhar?s wife, between freedom and opression. Despite the differences, resamblances: their belongings. When Lazhar uses his wife?s stamp on assignments, he is taking Martine along with him.In the most majority of moves about teachers and students, the new teacher always brings a fresh air. Monsieur Lazhar, on the other hand, brings back the methods and rigor of old times, along, however, with a real passion for kids. Indirectly, the movie questions the modern teaching methods that include a constant parental intervention and that ultimately undermine the teacher-student relationship. Counting with an amazing leading actor and a great cast - if they made a remake of "My Girl', Sophie N?lisse just had to play Vada, due to her resemblance to that young Anna Chlumsky - "Monsieur Lazhar" perfectly balances fiction and reality, finding the accurate measure of drama required.

Secondo quanto riportato, l?aumento avverr? in scala 1-5.

    Meet the Mayor: Somerville Theatre

Welcome to "Meet the Mayor," a segment in which we interview local Foursquare Mayors in their natural habitats.

    Somerville Theatre?

    Christina Miller

    ?

Best and worst films and/or events you've seen here?
The best would be the Mulberry Tree, part of the IFFBoston 2011. I don't see bad movies. Just kidding. I totally saw Sucker Punch, but it wasn't here.

Sucker Punch was the best movie ever. I am lying.
It was horrible, and about prostituting young girls and lobotomizing them so you could prostitute them. It was just bad. I'm not even sure it had a plot. I still can't figure out why Jon Hamm was in it. He was, like, hammering ice picks in girls' heads. I'm like, "Jon Hamm, what are you doing?! You're a mad man! ?Don't lobotomize people in shitty movies!"

Explain why I should visit Somerville more often.
Because Somerville is full of awesome. We have the cheapest movie theater you'll find, it serves beer, and I think Davis is it's pretty much the only square that actually has a square. I mean, it's a triangle. But it has a plaza, and people hang out and listen to music and eat ice cream and chill.

Why are so few places called "squares" literal squares?
Despite being a hub of universities, apparently they don't study geometry in Boston.

With changing lifestyles and involvement of luxury in every aspect of life, human beings are facing various physical problems. According to a recent study, back pain is the most common problem that is affecting more than 50% people all over the world. Since we all show a slipshod attitude towards the comfort of our back, we are more likely to have frequent back pains with the most common cause being a bad posture. Therefore, to live a healthy life, maintaining a good posture is very important. It is well said by someone that, our posture can portray the best and worst image of our personality; in fact, our posture says a lot about us, it lets others have an idea about our confidence level. As a matter of fact, our personal behavior and lifestyle plays a vital role in developing a good or bad seating habit; perhaps, this is the reason why people, who spend most of their time in an office, sitting on the same chair, get affected by back pain very easily. In such a situation auto back support is something that can help you in maintaining a good posture to avoid back pains.

If truth to be told, no one can help you in improving your posture until and unless you are willing to do so, because only your firm determination can improve your personal habits. Though it is only your will power that can make it possible, but as far the appropriate back support is concerned, auto back support can help you in providing required support to your back. Studies have proved that an appropriate back support device can help a person in getting rid of back pain at a faster pace. In fact, those fortunate people who are still untouched by the trauma of back pain can also use auto back support to develop a good seating habit to avoid it in future as well.

Despite the fact that auto back support cannot heal problems related to spinal cord, all physicians suggest it, as it can help a patient in avoiding acute back pains by giving his or her back, a cozy support. It is a device that can be used with an office seat, study chair or car seat and you can use this device wherever you spend most of your time. For professionals, who spend most of their time in front of a computer, this device can really do wonders. If you are one them and sit on a stark chair for the whole day, then try this out and throw back pains out of your life.

Since there is no particular solution for frequent back pains, you need to improve your posture to reduce the frequency of pain. Definitely, auto back support can help you in improving your posture and avoiding frequent back pains; moreover, it can enhance your confidence level by maintaining an impressive posture. Since you cannot modify the surroundings as per your convenience, it is better to use this device to create a healthy environment for your back.

Online video ads have become the norm of Internet surfing. Businesses use online video ads to promote products, explain services, or talk about company news. Publishers get paid for promoting business videos with ads on their website. Internet surfers, on the other hand, are looking for any apps that allow for skipping online video ads.

After visiting so many sites, you start to get tired of seeing these video ads. You want to see the video, not watch an ad that?s even longer than the video as you wait for the desired content. Also, these ads place additional streaming time to every video. In this day and age where you pay for every kilobyte, megabyte, and gigabyte used for our Internet connection service, we don?t want to waste allotted data watching ads we have no interest in.

    Ways to Skip Video Ads

The more online ads invade videos, the more people will want to skip video ads. There are certain ways you can try to avoid them depending on what type of format the video ad takes.

    google_ad_channel = ?7940249670, ? + AB_cat_channel + AB_unit_channel;
    google_language = ?en?;
    google_ad_region = ?test?;

    Ticker Ads

Some videos have tiny ads that run like a ticker at the bottom of the media player screen. Often you can find these ticker ads in YouTube videos. These aren?t as obtrusive as full-blown ads. But if you want to skip them anyway, you can move your mouse pointer to the top-right edge of the ticker. A small ?X? should appear that you can click on to close the ticker ad.

    Full Screen Ad

When you have those full-blown video ads that run before the actual content, those are harder to avoid. You?ll find these types of ads commonly attached to news media video. If you want to try to skip ads like these, you can move the media player slider bar forward to a point where the news content starts. But you have to make sure the content has gone through the buffering stage and has fully loaded, or you may have problems getting the rest of the video to load.

Companies are taking advantage of people?s aversions to video ads to introduce new technology that allows you to skip ads by simple pressing on a tab. This software is dependent on the publisher and the video format.

Internet Users No Longer Forced To Watch Video Ads

The more advertisers try to force people to watch video ads, the more problems they will find with people refusing to watch their content. But some companies are taking the initiative with getting rid of the ads in their videos, or introducing software for skipping online video ads as this gives the video control back to the internet users.

Dad busted for fake porn profile of kid's principal

    Maricopa County Sheriff's Office

    By Helen A.S. Popkin

When he finally confessed to creating a fake porn profile for his son's assistant principal, Robert Dale Esparza Jr. of Gilbert, Arizona, "sort of laughed," said Dennis Ogorchock, a detective with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Computer Crimes Unit. But soon, Esparza may be laughing from a jail cell.

Last year, Esparza created the profile of Frank Hendricsen, assistant principal of Gateway Pointe Elementary School, where his son attended, using the faculty member's full name and photos as a revenge prank, the detective told msnbc.com in a phone interview. ?

Esparza, 34, believed his son's story ? that Hendricsen confiscated the boy's iPod and wouldn't give it back, so the father lashed out on the Internet. Sure, he was angry when he first built the profile, but Ogorchock says Esparza "thought (the porn profile) was going to be funny and everyone would get a kick out of it."

When first?confronted by the officer, Esparza even tried to claim his son made the porn profile. Given the sophisticated sexual content however?? 13-year-old kids don't talk about "swingers" ? not to mention the complete lack of grammatical errors, the detective wasn't buying it.

Now, a year after the May 2011 investigation into the fake porn profile and a recent week-long trial, a jury convicted Esparza of computer fraud and identity theft, two felonies for which he may face jail time when he's sentenced June 5. (Msnbc.com has been unable to reach Esparza or Hendricsen for comment.)

"The victim is pretty shaken up about the whole ordeal," Ogorchock said. "His reputation, everything he had worked for his whole career was on the line." The detective said Hendricsen learned about the fake profile on porn website xHamster from a prospective employer who Googled Hendricsen's name after a job interview for a principal position at another school. That's when Hendricsen contacted the sheriff's department.

The profile Esparza posted on xHamster ? a video-sharing and online community porn hub?? included Hendricsen's full name, photos of both the assistant principal and his wife scraped, or copied, from the Gateway Pointe Elementary School website, and described the couple as "swingers" looking to play.

For further humiliation, Esparza included four photos of male genitals (scraped from Craiglist personal ads, but identified as Hendricsen's), and more than a dozen "favorited" videos on the porn hub, all deliberately chosen by Esparza for their naughty school girl themes.?

And to ensure the incriminating content would be among the first results for anyone who Googled Hendricsen's name, Esparza accessed the profile at least 25 times, Ogorchock said, communicating with other xHamster members and using the profile in the casual encounters section of Craigslist.

The reputation bomb worked so well, the detective quickly tracked down Esparza via the IP address provided by the happy-to-help xHamster webmasters, who also removed the fake profile after Hendricsen contacted the site.

The Internet trail led to a computer which belonged to Esparza's employer ? Safeguard, a locally owned, home-security company (where, the Arizona Repubic reports, Esparza no longer works). Ogorchock connected Esparza to?Hendricsen via the police report the angry father filed against the assistant principal?for allegedly taking his son's iPod, an accusation that was never proven.

That led to a warrant and search on Esparza's work laptop, which revealed visits to xHamster, Craigslist, the school website where he scraped the photos, and the Google Gmail account he created using Hendricsen's name. Despite the evidence and the confession, Esparza turned down probation and went to trial, which Ogorchock thinks Esparza did, hoping the jury would be sympathetic to him. Now he'll be lucky if he avoids jail time.

Even as bemused as Ogorchock is by this convoluted tale of iPod-inspired anger, he gets that in the end, it's no laughing matter.

"People who think these kinds of pranks are funny don't really understand how the Internet works," he said. "In this case, who knows what's been done with the information (on the fake profile) before it was taken down, who's seen it and how many copies are out there? Once something's posted on the Internet, it's out there forever."

Helen A.S. Popkin goes blah blah blah about the Internet privacy. Tell her to get a real job on? Twitter?and/or?Facebook. Also,?Google+.

    GaryMoller.com - Health, Fitness - Naturally!: Exercise prescription ...

Here's an essay by my daughter, Mary-Ann Moller, who is studying sport and exercise nutrition at University of Otago. I think a little of her Dad has rubbed off onto her! ?What do you think about what she is saying? ?Is she right? ?Is there a tendency to create dependence? ?Please post your response, thanks. ?Incidentally, she got 100% for this essay.

Here's the statement that she had to respond to:

Increasingly exercise is being advocated as a treatment strategy for a range of?medical conditions. In response, a new field of 'clinical exercise prescription' has?evolved. Clinical exercise specialists aim to prescribe safe and physiologically?sound programmes. These specialists working with clients in clinical settings?often create a dependence that effectively changes the client's perception of?physical activity or exercise. We encourage this dependence by over-complicating?exercise prescription.

Consider the above statement and provide well argued support for your interpretation of?the statement.

Exercise prescription experts working in the clinical setting overly complicate exercise prescription creating a dependency. This tendency to encourage the individual to brainlessly defer to the ?expert? is symptomatic of what is happening throughout modern society: The insidious process of disempowerment of the individual and the granting of their power of choice to both the State and to the professional Expert. The two drivers of this process are the desire of others to get their hands on the hard-earned dollars of the individual and the ever-growing need by the State to have total control over every aspect of its citizens? lives.?

An expert is a person who belongs to a secretive organisation, called a ?profession?. For a group to be a profession it must have, in addition to rituals of initiation, such as exams and internship, it must have its own secret language in the form of special acronyms and long-winded words.?

In the profession of orthopaedics, for example, indecipherable acronyms abound. These leave the prostate patient in a state of confused awe and helplessness before the God-like specialist.

The diagnosis,?IDKJ?, is authoritatively pronounced by the orthopaedic surgeon and recorded for posterity upon the ?God-Sheet?. Upon viewing this pronouncement from On High, all those down the priestly line of command obediently respond with appropriate mutterings of agreement and the patient is anointed with ritualistic treatments, such as ultrasound and core conditioning. ?IDKJ?, if you would like to know, is priestly code for ?Internal derangement of the knee joint?. That still does not mean much at all to the unwashed. There are actually codes within codes. IDKJ has three meanings. Translated from professional orthopaedic jargon, ?IDKJ? actually means ?You have something wrong with your knee?. But wait - there?s more to this code. It really means ?I Don?t Know Jack-shit?. Only those high up within the orthopaedic priesthood know that one! So, if they don?t know jack-shit about what is going on with a person?s sore knee, why don?t they say so? The reason why they do not is because doing so would be giving away some of the power they have over the individual.

Knowledge is Power: with Ignorance it is Control

This process of disempowerment is in evidence within clinical exercise prescription. The average reading age of New Zealand adults is 13 years, so why use words like ?biceps? or ?abdominals? when working with a patient when ?upper arm? and ?tummy? will suffice? Why teach incredibly complex and potentially dangerous exercise routines that involve teetering on an over-sized ball that requires constant supervision to prevent complete confusion and inevitable injury from falling off when the same could be achieved with mowing the lawn with a hand-mower or digging the garden with a spade? Which is better when it comes to real practical rehabilitation? Unless the patients are in training for the next Swiss Ball Olympics!

Further complicating matters for the patient is the drive by over-inflated egos which require constant pumping. Experts need to totally bamboozle their patients to create a dependency which will keep pumping hard to ensure their ego doesn't deflate. Utter complexity with the aid of exclusive props (very expensive exercise machines), along with not really understanding a single word of the professional language ensures patients keep coming back. And this of course equals profit!

Exercise prescription must of course address the health issue at hand, but needs to be in a form that the individual can apply to their unique personal circumstances, relevant to their everyday life. It must be based on their lifestyle and what they prefer to do, without reliance on expensive and fairly inaccessible exercise equipment. When a patient goes to a rehabilitation clinic they are expected to leave their brain in the carpark. Instead, exercise prescription should empower the individual. Experts should be telling the patient ?when you get out of the car, don't forget your brain, because you will be needing it!?.

Weight Loss Myths Busted ? Sharecare.com Blog

I?ve heard just about every weight-loss myth imaginable. It?s time to set the record straight! Don?t let these common misconceptions keep you from successfully losing the weight and keeping it off.

    Weight Loss Myth #1

?I can?t lose weight if I was overweight as a child.?

You can always lose weight! You are not your childhood or your genes. Your genes account for about 25 percent of your health. Your lifestyle choices account for about 75 percent! If you implement proven strategies, you can successfully lose weight at any age and keep it off. In fact, the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) reports that over 70 percent of successful weight-loss maintainers were overweight as children and teenagers.

    Weight Loss Myth #2

?I can?t lose weight if I?ve tried diets in the past and they didn?t work.?

It may be time to change your approach. More than 90 percent of those surveyed by the NWCR reported previous attempts at weight loss. In fact, over 60 percent said that they tried four or more times to lose weight before they were able to lose the weight and keep it off.

Often times, weight loss and weight maintenance is unsuccessful because people try weight-loss fads that lead to yo-yo dieting instead of proven methods. If you implement the right strategies you WILL lose weight, and if you consistently maintain these healthy behaviors you WILL keep it off.

    Weight Loss Myth #3

?If I lose weight I?ll have to starve myself to keep it off.?

Here?s something to chew on: A vast majority (85 percent)?of successful weight maintainers reported that they eat three healthy meals per day, with breakfast being the most important meal. They also reported that they did not feel deprived; in fact, they felt they were happier, had more energy and exhibited more self-confidence.

If you follow a healthy eating plan that includes an abundance of fruits and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, low fat dairy and healthy fats, you can feel totally satiated while providing your brain and body the key nutrition that it needs to optimize your health.

    Weight Loss Myth #4

?To lose weight I have to become an exercise fanatic.?

Not true, unless you consider walking fanatical. Successful weight loss maintainers reported that they generally exercised for three times per week, for 30 minutes at a time. Walking was the most reported physical activity.

This is still less than what is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health and the National Academy of Sports Medicine. I recommend that you get 10,000 steps per day (or accumulate 70,000 steps for the week) and at least 20 minutes of physical activity a day that makes you sweat and gets your heart pumping. This can activity can take the form of fast walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, using an elliptical machine, resistance training, yoga, and recreational sports.

    Weight Loss Myth #5

    ?I can?t lose weight because I?m over 40.?

Age isn?t a valid excuse. It is true that your metabolic rate decreases as you age. It?s also true that you lose lean muscle as you age. But regular physical activity slows and/or prevents a decline in both. If you incorporate regular cardiovascular training, resistance training, and flexibility training, you can maintain and enhance your metabolism and lean muscle mass.

Like any tech company worth its weight in silicon, Intel puts plenty of cash into research, often partnering with outside labs and schools that are less concerned with turning every project into a multi-billion dollar product. After throwing $30 million at Carnegie Mellon last year to open two new labs, Chipzilla is investing $40 million more in a global network of university research centers. Over the next five years that money will be rolled out to what the company is calling, Intel Collaborative Research Institutes (ICRI). The ICRI are based on the same premise as Intel's Science and Technology Centers, like those opened at Mellon, except with a global reach. Two existing labs, the Intel Visual Computing Institute at Saarland University and the Intel-NTU Connected Context Computing Center at National Taiwan University are being rolled into the program. In addition, three new centers are being opened up, including ICRIs for Sustainable Connected Cities in the United Kingdom, Secure Computing at the Technische Universität Darmstadt and Computational Intelligence at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. For more info on what sort or work they'll be doing at the various labs check out the PR after the break.
