A high school football coach and two of his assistants have been suspended following an incident during a football practice, Des Moines Public Schools officials confirmed Wednesday.
Spokesman Phil Roeder said "Coach Mihalovich and two of his assistants are on suspension due to a school district investigation. Because this matter is pending, we will have nothing further to add until the investigation is complete."
Tom Mihalovich is the head football coach at Lincoln High School. ?This year is his 12th season with Lincoln.
Assistant coaches Kevin Johnston and Larry Gamblin were also placed on?administrative?leave.
School officials have declined to comment about what happened during the incident. ?Mihalovich has also not returned phone calls to KCCI.
Roeder said Wednesday afternoon that reports Mihalovich has been fired are false. ?
He said the investigation?process by the school district's human resources department got underway Wednesday. ?Roeder said there is?no set deadline for this process, but the district plans for it to be completed as soon as possible.
The mother of the high school player involved in the incident talked briefly to KCCI Wednesday afternoon.
She said she could confirm that her son was enrolled in Dowling High School on Tuesday instead of Lincoln. ?
She declined to discuss specifics of the case. ?She said the family was consulting with an attorney.
