Stock picks of the rich | Bankrate.com

You might think that the wealthy invest their money in expensive hedge funds or individual stocks. But increasingly, they favor keeping it simple in ways that average investors can replicate.

The founder and chairman of Tiger 21, an investing club made up of 202 individuals with at least $10 million to invest, told Bloomberg that members are favoring exchange-traded index funds over?private equity?or hedge funds.

In its annual survey of members, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust rose to the No. 2 stock pick. Overall, ETFs were more popular than equity hedge funds and mutual funds, with 23 percent of members preferring them for equity investments. Last year, 19 percent of the members preferred ETFs.

Individual stocks are still the No. 1 pick among members for the equity portion of their portfolio, but that method of investing fell by 7 percent, to 43 percent since 2011, while hedge fund investing dropped from 27 percent to 21 percent. Mutual funds are favored by 13 percent of the investors.

The typical portfolio for members includes 23 percent real estate, 22 percent equity, 15 percent private equity, 13 percent fixed income, 13 percent cash, 10 percent hedge funds and 1 percent commodities.

The move toward ETFs, which trade like stocks, and index funds is a sign that members see the market stabilizing and returning to normal, Michael Sonnenfeldt, founder of Tiger 21, told Bloomberg. "Members have crept, crawled and walked back to the kinds of investment portfolios they had before 2008," he said.

Do you believe the market is stabilizing, and have you adjusted your portfolio accordingly?

PlayMakers Rep's Premiere of David Ball's Zany New Adaptation of ...

The cast of ?The Imaginary Invalid? includes Kathryn Hunter-Williams (left) as Klytemnestra, Steven Epp as Argon, Molly Ward as Toinette (photo by Jon Gardiner)

The instant Steven Epp as Moli?re steps out on the stage of the Paul Green Theatre to introduce the PlayMakers Repertory Company?s brand-new adaptation of the celebrated 17th century French actor and playwright?s 339-year-old play, The Imaginary Invalid, to a 21st century audience in Chapel Hill, it is clear that this is no average resurrection of a classic. Instead, Moli?re becomes a character in his own play; and the present is woven into the production ? often hilariously and often erratically, but always with an eye on the original story.

The story about Argon (also played by Steven Epp), a wealthy hypochondriac convinced he has every disease known to man (especially those that originate from bowel problems), is rife with sight gags and pratfalls and totally insane characters (spoiler: there?s not a normal one in the bunch). From the moment Argon receives his first shot of antiseptic spray from his nurse (Julie Fishell), it is clear that writer David Ball, who created this adaptation especially for PlayMakers, and director Dominique Serrand have a bona fide hit on their hands, a hilarious and fast-paced retelling of the comedy that was Moli?re?s last play ? and, ultimately, the one that killed him, because Moli?re died onstage while playing Argon on Feb. 7, 1673. Though there?s nothing funny about the French master of comedy dying onstage, there very definitely is something funny happening on the PlayMakers stage with this adaptation.

The play opens with Argon introducing his various maladies while his nurse (Julie Fishell) tells him what his bills are for the various tests. It is fairly certain that most people in the audience could relate to the shock Argon feels at the cost for invasive tests that ultimately tell him nothing about what is really wrong with him ? or how his quack of a doctor, Dr. Wachauvia (played by Jeffrey Blair Cornell), will cure each of the various ills. When Argon has had enough of the bills, he calls (and calls and yells) for his assistant Toinette, played by Molly Ward, and thus begins a constant parade of people in Argon?s life who clearly see through his hypochondria and use it to try to bilk him of his wealth.

One of those people who couldn?t care less about Argon?s money ? and is just as crazy as he is ? bounces onstage and throughout the play with a delightful zaniness. She is Argon?s daughter Little Angel, played with a zest and wide-eyed craziness by Katie Paxton. Paxton contorts into positions that put a pretzel to shame, and is so adept with facial expressions that it is a disappointment when she turns toward the other side of the stage and her fantastic elasticity cannot be seen.

Katie Paxton?s ability to play the angelic brat with a puppeteer?s deftness and a personality that mimics the monstrous horror of a Chucky doll brings histrionics to the first act that only escalate as the bizarre characters continue to do their pirouettes onstage. Little Angel?s love for Irving Luigi (played by Shakespeare veteran Josh Tobin) is what drives her, and that love (as most loves) is what makes her crazier than she already is. When Luigi finally arrives onstage, the combination of the two of them makes for hilarity personified.

Argon?s psychosomatic illnesses lend themselves well to jokes that most grade school children find irresistible: fart jokes, breast and sex jokes, pratfalls, and goofy characterizations. They also elicited plenty of laughs from the opening night/world premiere audience, though the loudest guffaws came from a totally unscripted comment made by Argon when a pre-teen made for the bathroom about midway through the first act.

?Where do you think you?re going?? Epp called out, never missing a beat and remaining in character as Argon. Everyone in the audience dissolved in laughter, though the boy didn?t seem to notice; and the play continued without interruption.

Moli?re?s ability to use satire to expose religious hypocrisy translates well to this period in time when most Americans are concentrating on the presidential elections; and David Ball?s new adaptation of The Imaginary Invalid works hard to expose one of the central issues in the current campaign for president: the obsession with the state of health care in the United States. From the moment Argon takes to his bed, nightgown flapping, it is ironically clear that the ?lesser? health-care workers (the nurse and the Bucket Boy, aptly portrayed by Nilan Johnson) are the wisest of the bunch.

The doctors are fools who work for Argon only because of his incredible wealth. They have no idea what is wrong with him, if anything, and simply play along with his imaginary ailments (one of which appears to be easily fixed, according to the nurse. Simply ?wash the dingus,? she says, over and over). Without revealing the ending of this farce, suffice it to say that it is a joke recognizable to all and, ironically, mirrors Moli?re?s own tragic end.

Galaxy hurt Sounders' playoff position

By GREG BEACHAM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:38 p.m. ET Oct. 28, 2012

CARSON, Calif. (AP) - David Beckham thinks the Los Angeles Galaxy put themselves in a solid position to defend their MLS title with a win in their regular-season finale.

Hurting the Seattle Sounders' playoff plans was just a small bonus.

Mike Magee scored on a pass from Robbie Keane in the 83rd minute, and the Galaxy kept the Sounders in third place in the Western Conference with a 1-0 victory Sunday night.

Josh Saunders earned his ninth shutout for the champs, who head into the postseason as the West's fourth seed after four largely outstanding months of play. A poor start to the season left the star-studded Galaxy playing catch-up in the West, but they might be gaining fast.

"We've put ourselves in a good position," said Beckham, who played 62 minutes in his first match in three weeks. "It was important to get a good result tonight, get a few minutes, and now the big one is Thursday."

The Galaxy already knew they'll host the fifth-seeded Vancouver Whitecaps on Thursday night in a one-game knockout playoff. Los Angeles still played to win, putting Beckham and Landon Donovan in the starting lineup after lengthy injury absences.

"We wanted to get some rhythm and some continuity heading into the playoffs," said Donovan, who played the entire game.

The loss was a missed opportunity for Seattle, which remained stuck in third in the West with 56 points, allowing Real Salt Lake to finish second with 57.

A win or tie would have put the Sounders into the second playoff slot, but now Salt Lake will host the second game of their two-game conference semifinal, the more advantageous position in the home-and-home series. The third-place finish also might have CONCACAF Champions League ramifications for the Sounders down the road.

"I think we're ready for the playoffs," Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said. "Tonight is going to be a good motivator. When you get slapped at the end of the season, it reminds you how it feels, and how you don't want that feeling again."

The loss became doubly painful for the Sounders after forward Eddie Johnson left late in the first half with an apparent hamstring injury. Johnson, who leads Seattle with 14 goals, will have an MRI on Monday.

"I made a couple of long runs earlier in the game, and my hammy kind of tightened up on me," Johnson said. "I felt a big cramp in my hamstring, and I know what that feels like. There's definitely something there."

After a lively game featuring numerous near-misses by both offenses, Magee scored from just outside the penalty area when the Sounders left him unmarked. Magee easily converted a pass from Keane, who capped his standout second half of the season with several near-goals and the decisive assist.

"Momentum-wise, it's huge," Magee said. "You always see the teams that are doing well at the end of the season doing well in the playoffs. You always want to do well against a team, we hope we're going to be seeing in the playoffs in a couple of weeks."

Magee's goal was just the 15th allowed in 21 games by Michael Gspurning, the Sounders' Austrian goalie. Seattle allowed just 33 goals this season, fewest in the West.

Brad Evans appeared to score a tying goal in the final seconds of injury time, but teammate Fredy Montero was called for a handball an instant earlier while down in front of the net.

Los Angeles avoided a three-game season series sweep by the Sounders, who haven't beaten the Galaxy at Home Depot Center since 2009.

Donovan missed the Galaxy's last MLS match with a bone bruise on his left knee, and Beckham also sat out to rest his sore left ankle. Neither star had played in a match since Oct. 6.

Beckham and Keane missed scoring strikes by a few inches in the first half, both curling shots just outside the post. Keane nearly scored on a leaping volley off a sharp cross from Donovan in the 41st minute.

Keane barely missed the net again in the 46th, chipping a shot just wide over Gspurning. He put another beautiful shot just off the crossbar in the 53rd minute, freezing Gspurning as he watched the high-arcing ball go over his head.

Lakers forward Pau Gasol, comedian Russell Brand, chef Gordon Ramsay and Victoria Beckham attended the game.

3 Ways To Keep Your Family Out Of The Sick Zone | Pregnancy Blog

Posted on 26. Oct, 2012 by Danielle Buffardi in Family

It?s that time of year, mamas. And as much as we?d love for our family members to avoid getting sick, we know that?s highly unlikely.

But it?s not impossible.

Practicing good hygiene habits is always a forerunner in helping to stop the spread of germs to the rest of our family.

Here?s three easy ways to keep you and your family on the healthy track during cold season and away from the sick zone.

1. Keep Your Hands Clean

You?ve heard this a hundred times from every source, but it really is the best way to help keep germs at bay.

And use your better judgment here for you and your family. Make the kids wash their hands when they get home from school, after handling food, and of course after each bathroom run.

Our kids learn by example, don?t forget, so if they see their parents practicing good hygiene rituals, chances are they?ll pick up the same routines as they get older.

It?s also wise to keep a bottle of hand sanitizer in every car and use it often ? like after any trips to the stores and after sports practices.

Get your family in the habit of sanitizing their hands on a regular basis when soap and water isn?t an option.

2. Be Observant

If there?s coughing and sneezing going on, move away.

If you?re coughing and sneezing, cover your mouth and sanitize your hands immediately afterwards.

Be mindful of keeping your hands away from your face and remind your family to do the same. While most germs can be spread through the air, some revel in hand-to-hand contact, that?s why it?s important to wash your hands regularly and keep them off of your face.

Always have a can of Lysol handy at home and use it around the house on a regular basis to clean things like the phone, the doorknobs, and other hard surfaces.

I?ve always preferred the can of Lysol to the wipes since you can just spray and go ? no need to wipe as it evaporates as it disinfects.

3. Get Enough Rest

Your body needs to rejuvenate itself in its entirety, and what better way to give it a head start and a strong foundation than by giving it the proper amount of rest and relaxation.

Be sure to have a nighttime routine that?s followed and stuck to by both parents and the kids. Getting everyone in a routine for a full night?s rest will not only help those that do get bitten by the sick bug, but it will especially be a great aid against getting sick in the first place.

If your body is at it?s best before getting sick, you?re giving it the best fighting chance to win at not getting sick, that?s an easy way to look at it.

?

  • If the sick zone does hit your house and family, be sure to check in with the family doctor so they can be aware of the symptoms your family member is going through and point you in the direction of the proper medicine for such symptoms.

In 2 murder cases, mothers turn in their own sons

GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) ? Mindy Sigg sat sobbing on Thursday, listening to prosecutors tell a court that her 17-year-old son had confessed to the abduction and killing of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway.

While any mother would be devastated, there was an even more heartbreaking wrinkle for Sigg: She was the one who called police.

It was not the only high-profile case this week in which a mother made that painful choice. In New Jersey, Anita Saunders saw something on a Facebook page that led her to call police.

Her two sons, ages 15 and 17, are now charged with murdering 12-year-old Autumn Pasquale, a bike-lover who authorities said was lured to their home with the promise of new parts.

What does it feel like to turn in your child, knowing they could be sentenced to many years in prison? Surely, no one knows but those who've done it.

But a main motivation, according to one criminologist, is simply a desire to do the right thing.

"These are law-abiding people, pro-social people," said Kathleen Heide, professor of criminology at the University of South Florida. "And besides doing the right thing, the parents often want to get their children help."

What they often aren't aware of, though, are the full ramifications in terms of likely punishment.

"If these are cases of first- or second-degree murder, in most cases the kids will be charged as adults," Heide said. "This means they can be sentenced to life in prison."

In both cases, authorities are deciding whether to prosecute the suspects as adults.

Certainly not all parents are ready to turn in their kids. One high-profile case from the 1990s, in fact, resulted in strains between the United States and Israel, when a father helped his teenage son escape this country after a particularly brutal murder in Maryland. The son, Samuel Sheinbein, confessed and is now serving a 24-year sentence in Israel ? a lighter term than he likely would have gotten in the United States.

Mindy Sigg made a different decision. Reached by phone on Wednesday, she told The Associated Press: "I made the phone call, and he turned himself in. That's all I have to say." Then she broke down in tears.

Her son Austin Reed Sigg made his first court appearance Thursday in the death of Jessica and in a separate attack on a 22-year-old runner, who managed to break free, in May.

Prosecutors say he has confessed in both cases, and investigators have overwhelming DNA evidence against him. He was ordered held without bail; prosecutors are expected to formally charge him next week.

Sigg's father, Rob Sigg, issued a written statement Thursday commending his ex-wife's decision and asking for prayers and support for the Ridgeway family.

"This horrible event is a tragedy for both the families, as well as the community. I ask also for your prayers and support for Austin's mother, whose courageous act ? unimaginably painful for any parent ? has put this tragedy on the path to resolution," he said. "I am hopeful that as the legal process unfolds, the Ridgeway family may come to know peace."

Peg Claspell, who lives near the Siggs, said she was grateful to the mother for her decision and called it the "most loving, difficult thing."

"I can't imagine the pain for her, and she's in my prayers," Claspell said. "She has a long and difficult time ahead of her."

Claspell's husband, Tom, struggled when asked if he would turn in a child. "I can say yes, but I don't know if I would. It would be a very hard thing to do," he said, explaining it would depend on the severity of the crime.

In a case like this, "I probably would," he said.

In the New Jersey case, Justin Robinson, 15, and Dante Robinson, 17, have been charged with murder and other counts in the death of 12-year-old Autumn, whose body was found Monday stuffed in a recycling bin only blocks from her home in Clayton.

An autopsy found the seventh-grader suffered blunt force trauma consistent with strangulation.

The boys are due in court Friday for a hearing to determine if they will remain in custody.

What's rare about both cases, said Heide, the criminologist, is that boys of this age rarely kill girls, especially girls so young. "Usually boys this age kill other males, and in their own age cohort," she said.

Jessica disappeared three weeks ago after leaving her home in the Denver suburb of Westminster to walk to school. She never arrived. Her remains were found on Oct. 10. Sigg was taken into custody late Tuesday after police received the mother's phone call. He lived about a mile from Jessica.

Sigg wore a blue-green jail uniform and had a light goatee when he appeared in a heavily guarded courtroom in Golden.

Four of his family members were seated in the court, and they sobbed at times during the hearing.

When District Judge Ann Gail Meinster asked Sigg if a parent was present, he said "Yes" and looked toward his relatives. He then mostly sat with his head bowed.

Seven of Jessica's family members sat in the courtroom with their arms around each other. Sigg glanced in their direction just once.

Public defender Ryan Loewer had argued for setting bail for Sigg, saying he has no prior criminal history. Prosecutor Hal Sargent said Sigg had confessed and investigators had a strong case.

"There's DNA evidence, and the evidence is overwhelming," he said.

After the hearing, Jefferson County District Attorney Scott Storey said prosecutors cannot seek the death penalty for Sigg because he is a minor.

Storey said the law is unclear on whether Sigg could be sentenced to life in prison.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2005 that the death penalty was unconstitutional for minors. Colorado law allows for life sentences for juveniles convicted of serious crimes, but it would be up to a judge to determine whether that's appropriate, Storey said.

Storey declined to discuss the possibility that Sigg might enter an insanity plea.

Former high school classmates painted a picture of Sigg as an intelligent teen who often wore black and complained about school but who would stay late sometimes to work on computers. Sigg was interested in mortuary science and was taking forensics classes, said Rachel Bradley, 17, who attended Standley Lake High School with him.

Sigg enrolled in August at Arapahoe Community College, which offers the state's only accredited mortuary science program. He didn't have enough credits yet to apply to that program.

Sigg had left Standley Lake High in July after finishing the 11th grade and later earned a GED. School officials don't know why he left.

Former schoolmate Sarah Morevec said Sigg had been bullied for having a high voice.
