Samsung Galaxy S4 owners can test Android 4.3

Android updates aren't exactly the best kept secrets in the world, and as a result, the highly anticipated 4.3 update has been spotted once more. And this time you can actually use it. The update is available for the Google Play Edition Samsung Galaxy S4 (GT-I9505G) and the Snapdragon-powered version of the Galaxy S4 (GT-I9505), and it isn't through official channels.

You can install the update if you have one of those devices by following these steps. However, be warned that doing so will void your warranty. You will need a rooted device with a custom recovery installed.

Now try out Android 4.3 on your Google Play Edition Galaxy S4

?

It was recently revealed that the Google Play Edition for the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One will not be getting updates from Google. Instead, updates for these devices will be handled by Samsung and HTC respectively. Both the devices have been found to run on different kernels than Nexus devices.

The Galaxy S4 runs kernel version 3.4.0, while the HTC One has kernel version 3.4.10. Nexus 4 also has 3.4.0, but it's a different build. It makes sense for Google to not have the same kernel version for the two Google Edition phones. Samsung and HTC would best know their own hardware and can customise the kernel based on it. Since kernel updates will be seeded by Samsung and HTC, the OS updates will also follow from them.

The Google Edition S4 and One went on sale at the US Google Play Store this week. While the S4 is priced at $649 (Rs 39,000 approx), the HTC One with stock Android can be had for $599 (Rs 36,000 appox). Confused about which one to pick? Check out our Catch-22 article.

Fed's Williams: 'still too early' to reduce QE3

By Ann Saphir

ROHNERT PARK, California (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve should not yet cut back on its massive bond-buying stimulus program, a top Fed official said on Friday, despite a stronger-than expected U.S. recovery and indications that the job market will continue to improve.

"Is it time to act? My answer is that it's still too early," San Francisco Federal Reserve President John Williams said in remarks prepared for delivery to the Sonoma County Economic Development Board.

The remarks were a turnaround for the centrist policymaker, who in May said that if the recovery continued to improve as expected, the Fed could start trimming its $85 billion-a-month bond-buying program by summer, and end it before the year is out. The purchases are designed to drive down long-term borrowing costs and encourage growth and hiring.

"For one thing, we need to be sure that the economy can maintain its momentum in the face of ongoing fiscal contraction," Williams said, citing the drag from Europe as a second risk to the U.S. recovery. "And it is also prudent to wait a bit and make sure that inflation doesn't keep coming in below expectations, possibly signaling a more persistent decline in inflation."

On Friday, Williams largely reiterated his forecast from May, saying he expects unemployment to fall to about 7.25 percent by the end of this year and to 6.75 percent by the end of next year, helped by inflation-adjusted growth in GDP of 2.25 percent this year and 3.25 percent next year.

Inflation, he predicted, will gradually rise from well below the Fed's 2-percent target now to about 1.75 percent in 2015.

"Looking ahead, if this forecast holds true, then at some point it will be appropriate to scale back our purchase program and eventually end it," Williams said.

By omitting a time frame for a dial-down of the Fed's asset purchases, Williams is no longer publicly at odds with the view set out last week by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, who said the U.S. central bank could start reducing the bond buys later this year and end them by mid-2014.

That relatively near-term timeline for the end of the Fed's third round of quantitative easing, or QE3, sent bond yields rising as investors began pricing in an earlier end to low interest rates.

Williams used his speech to fend off that notion, saying that any end to bond-buying stimulus would not change the Fed's promise to keep rates low until unemployment falls to at least 6.5 percent, as long as inflation stays contained.

He also reiterated the Fed's view that reducing bond purchases does not mean the Fed is tightening policy, and its vow to change its plans to reduce the program if economic data falls short of expectations.

"The good news is that the economy is on the mend," he said. When the time comes for the Fed to stop adding stimulus by buying long-term bonds, "I am confident that we can make this change without jeopardizing the recovery, while working toward our goals of maximum employment and price stability."

Intel hopes to speed up mobile Atom chip development

Intel shows Merrifield reference phone

Intel has a real presence in the smartphone world, but its tendency toward just one or two mobile chip releases per year makes it a slowpoke next to its ARM-based rivals. New CEO Brian Krzanich clearly isn't happy with this gap -- he tells Reuters that mobile Atom development could speed up under his watch. Although the executive is short on specifics, he notes that Intel is "evaluating" the schedule for future chips with hopes of improving their timing where possible. The proof will be in the pudding, of course -- the company needs to give opponents like Qualcomm a real run for their money. Just don't expect a similarly breakneck pace with Intel's TV service plans. Krzanich says Intel is being "cautious" about entering an industry that depends more on content than pure technology.

In recent years, illegal cooking oil incident led to the serious food safety risks and the negative social repercussions. Professor HE Yujian and his group from College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences establish two rapid and convenient colorimetric detections of illegal cooking oils based on phase transfer technology. This work could be helpful for the rapid and on-site detection of illegal cooking oil. Their work, entitled "Rapid colorimetric detection of illegal cooking oils based on phase transfer technology", will be published on SCIENCE CHINA Chemistry, 2013?7?.

The illegal cooking oil includes the refining of the waste oil from restaurant, the repeatedly used oil and the waste animal fats. Because illegal cooking oil may contain toxic polymer, peroxide and so on, is dangerous to human health. The most common clinical symptoms of poisoning include headache, vomiting and diarrhea abdominal pain. Recently years, because the illegal cooking oil inflows into the family kitchens, it led to the serious food safety risks in China. The administration from the government such as monitoring the purchase records and granting the administrative license can be used to control the problem of illegal cooking oil; however the rapid and on-site detection of illegal cooking oil is still necessary and urgent.

Professor HE Yujian, associate professor ZHAO Hong, doctoral students YUAN Longfei and ZHOU Ying et al., from University of Chinese Academy of Sciences establish two rapid and convenient colorimetric detections of illegal cooking oils based on phase transfer technology. The copper ions and the cationic gold nanoparticles protected by poly (diallyl dimethylammonium) chloride (PDDA) were used as the recognition probes. And the illegal cooking oil could be detected by naked-eye (as shown in the Figure 1). The results showed that qualified cooking oil mixed with 2.8% of the illegal cooking oil could be detected, and more than 5% of the illegal cooking oil could be accurately detected by naked-eye. These methods were applied in blind test for total of 235 samples; the results showed that the accurate rates of the blind tests were 95.7%.

Compared with the traditional methods, this method is a cost-effective process, and allowed rapid and simple colorimetric detection of illegal cooking oils without omplex pre-treatment. The work could provide beneficial methods for the rapid on-site detection of illegal cooking oil. It has a favorable application potential in civilian fields because of its high accuracy, simple and low cost. These research findings have applied for national patent.

###

In addition, Professor HE Yujian and his group have established various detections of illegal cooking oils based on NMR, GC, HPLC and MALDI-TOF-MS technology since 2012. These works have been published in professional journal of analytical chemistry and applied for national patents.

Egypt clerics warn of "civil war", urge calm

By Alastair Macdonald and Tom Perry

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's leading religious authority warned of "civil war" on Friday and called for calm after a member of the ruling Muslim Brotherhood was killed ahead of mass rallies aimed at forcing the president to quit.

"Vigilance is required to ensure we do not slide into civil war," the Al-Azhar clerical institution said in a statement reported by state media. It blamed "criminal gangs" who attacked mosques for street violence. Clashes linked to the political tensions have killed five and wounded scores in recent days.

The Brotherhood said all those killed were Mursi supporters, though this could not be independently verified.

The ancient Cairo academy, which traditionally maintains a distance from the political establishment, also urged opponents of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi to accept his offer of dialogue rather than pressing on with plans for demonstrations.

Welcoming an offer by Mursi on Wednesday to include the fragmented opposition in committees to review the constitution and promote national reconciliation, senior Al-Azhar scholar Hassan El-Shafei said they should accept "for the benefit of the nation instead of the insistence on confrontation".

Opposition leaders dismissed Mursi's offer as a repeat of suggestions they say have gone nowhere because the Brotherhood refuses to dilute its power.

Their supporters will gather in Cairo's Tahrir Square, site of the 2011 revolution, and in other cities on Friday and plan mass rallies on Sunday, when Mursi will complete his first year in office. The Brotherhood will gather supporters after Friday prayers near a mosque in northern Cairo to show their strength.

The movement said one of its members was shot dead and four wounded in an attack on a provincial party office in the Nile Delta city of Zagazig overnight and blamed anti-Mursi activists, which it portrays as an alliance of liberals and loyalists of ousted dictator Hosni Mubarak.

The army has urged both sides to reconcile and has warned that it could step back in to impose order if violence spins out of control - though it insists it will defend the democracy born out of the uprising against Mubarak in early 2011.

Mursi and the Brotherhood accuse loyalists of the old regime of being behind violence and of thwarting their efforts to reform an economy hobbled by corruption. Opponents accuse the Islamists, who have won a series of elections against a diffuse opposition, of seeking to entrench their power and impose Islam.

In a speech on Wednesday, Mursi denounced his critics but admitted some mistakes and offered talks to ease polarisation in politics that he said threatened Egypt's new democratic system.

But opposition leaders said their protests would go ahead.

"Dr. Mohamed Mursi's speech of yesterday only made us more determined in our call for an early presidential vote in order to achieve the goals of the revolution," the liberal opposition coalition said after its leaders met to consider a response.

"We are confident the Egyptian masses will go out in their millions in Egypt's squares and streets on June 30 to confirm their will to get the January 25 revolution back on track."

CROWDS

With the start of Egypt's weekend, people began to gather in Cairo's Tahrir Square, site of the uprising of January 25, 2011, and at venues in other towns. The atmosphere was largely festive but there were widespread fears of trouble in the days ahead.

It is hard to gauge how many may turn out but much of the population, even those sympathetic to Islamic ideas, are deeply frustrated by economic slump and many blame the government.

Previous protest movements since the fall of Mubarak have failed to gather momentum, however, among a population anxious for stability and fearful of further economic hardship.

The army, which helped protesters topple Mubarak and is on alert across the country guarding key locations, says it will act if politicians cannot reach consensus. The United States, which continues to fund the military as it did under Mubarak, has urged Egypt's leaders to pull together.

MEDIA

In his speech, Mursi threatened legal action against several named prominent figures. He said some judges and civil servants were obstructing him, and accused liberal media owners of bias.

Hours after he publicly accused one TV channel owner of tax evasion, the businessman, Mohamed al-Amin, found he was under investigation and barred from leaving the country, prompting his lawyer to tell Reuters: "This is dictatorship." Amin's channel notably airs satire modelled on that of U.S. comic Jon Stewart.

Separately, officials ordered the arrest of a talk show host on another channel known for his anti-Islamist diatribes and ordered that station to be shut down for inciting mutiny in the army and for insulting the armed forces and the police.

An anchor on state television resigned dramatically, live on air, in protest at what he said were attempts by the information minister, an Islamist, to control his programme.

Instability in the most populous Arab nation could send shocks well beyond its borders. Signatory to a key, U.S.-backed peace treaty with Israel, Egypt also controls the Suez Canal, a vital link in global transport networks between Europe and Asia.

"Egypt is historically a critical country to this region," U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who is on a tour of the Middle East, said on Wednesday, highlighting economic problems.

"Our hopes are that all parties ... the demonstration that takes place on Friday or the demonstration that takes place on Sunday, will all engage in peaceful, free expression," he said.

With the government short of cash and seeking funding from allies and the IMF, Kerry said Egypt should curb unrest in order to attract investment and restore vital tourism income. The U.S. ambassador in Cairo has angered opposition activists by saying explicitly that their protests risked being counter-productive.

Suspect in Boston Marathon bombing indicted

BOSTON (AP) ? Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev downloaded bomb-making instructions from an al-Qaida magazine, gathered online material on Islamic jihad and martyrdom, and later scribbled anti-American messages inside the boat where he lay wounded, a federal indictment charged Thursday.

The 30-count indictment includes many of the same weapon-of-mass-destruction charges, punishable by the death penalty, that were brought against the 19-year-old Tsarnaev in April.

But prosecutors added charges covering the slaying of an MIT police officer and the carjacking of a motorist during the getaway attempt that left Tsarnaev's older brother, Tamerlan, dead.

Three people were killed and more than 260 wounded by the two pressure-cooker bombs that went off near the finish line of the marathon on April 15.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured four days later, hiding in a boat parked in a backyard in Watertown, Mass.

According to the indictment, he scrawled messages on the inside of the vessel that said, among other things, "The U.S. Government is killing our innocent civilians," ''I can't stand to see such evil go unpunished," and "We Muslims are one body you hurt one you hurt us all."

The Tsarnaev brothers had roots in the turbulent Russian regions of Dagestan and Chechnya, which have become recruiting grounds for Islamic extremists. They had been living in the U.S. about a decade.

But the indictment made no mention of any larger conspiracy beyond the brothers, and no mention of any direct overseas contacts with extremists. Instead, the indictment suggests the Internet played a central role in the suspects' radicalization.

The papers detail how, after using the Internet to study jihad propaganda and bomb-making instructions, the brothers placed knapsacks containing shrapnel-packed pressure-cooker bombs near the finish line of the 26.2-mile race.

The court papers also confirm that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev inadvertently contributed to his brother's death by running him over during a shootout with police.

The charges also cover the slaying of Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer Sean Collier, who authorities say was shot in his cruiser by the Tsarnaevs during their getaway attempt. The brothers tried to take his gun, prosecutors said.

8 Designs That Rethink the Way We're Buried

8 Designs That Rethink the Way We're Buried

The way we bury our dead hasn?t changed much over the past two thousand years. But it needs to change soon, according to a group of designers, philanthropic foundations, and funeral directors who sponsored a recent design competition to rethink burial traditions in the face of emerging problems with the status quo. It's a less less macabre concept than it sounds.

In fact, there are some pretty compelling reasons to change the way we bury each other. For one thing, we?re running out of space: in cities especially, cemetery overcrowding is a major problem. More importantly, both burial and cremation are surprisingly bad for the environment, not to mention the health of the living?our dental fillings, for example, release thousands of pounds of mercury into the atmosphere when we?re cremated.

What?s holding up a revolution in the way we bury our dead? The answer is complex. Most of us are uncomfortable with talking candidly about death, and ritual is there to help to calm that anxiety. There are also legal hurdles with unconventional burials, not to mention challenges from the established commercial industry that surrounds funerals. Still, the ?natural burial? movement, which seeks to make bural more eco-friendly, is gaining momentum. So are less conventional burial methods, from space-borne ashes to fireworks.

So in April, Designboom launched Design for Death, a competition that invited designers to propose new burial methods. In the end, they received 2,050 proposals and distributed over $100,000 in prize money. A group of jurors?including architect Richard Meier, artist Ray Ceasar, and the director of the National Funeral Directors Association?voted to pick the best.

Some of them are trite, others are powerful?and most are a bit of both. After all, the ways we mourn (and the ways we take and give comfort) differ for everyone. With that in mind, some of these designers make powerful arguments for change. Check them out below.

The Infinity Burial Project by Jae Rhim Lee

"By trying to preserve dead bodies, we deny death, poison the living, and further harm the environment," says MIT research fellow and artist, Jae Rhim Lee, the designer behind the so-called Mushroom Death Suit. The idea is simple: certain strains of mushrooms are actually able to remediate toxins. Knowing that the average body is host to 219 different chemicals?all of which seep into the soil when we decompose?Jae Rhim's proposal would use "death suit" covered in the mushrooms to prevent the spread of toxins into the soil.

Emergence by Enzo Pascual, Pierre Rivi?re

Three French designers proposed this eco-casket, made from biodegradable plastics and embedded with a tree seedling, as an alternative to a traditional steel, wood, or plastic box. The beautiful thing about their design? Co2 emitted from your body's decomposition will power a perpetually-glowing headstone on the surface. It's a self-powered memorial.

Urn for a Ceremony by Agnes Hegedus

Hungarian designer Agnes Hegedus created this elegant little urn for a style of burial that was once more popular: the water-based cremation. Except in this case, the body isn't cremated on the water. Rather, an urn containing your ashes floats out to sea aboard a clay pot, which is designed to sink slowly down to the ocean floor. The pots would cost only a few dollars to make.

"I Wish To Be Rain" by Studio PSK and Matter & Fact

The increasingly common practice of "cloud seeding," which alters the intensity of natural rainfall by literally "seeding" it with particular chemicals, serves as the basis for this idea from two UK design teams. "Humans now have the ability affect, control and even cause natural phenomena, whether it is rain, an earthquake or a flood," write the designers. "We wonder if a person could do this not just by their actions, but literally transform themselves into types of natural spectacle." The concept would use a weather balloon to carry your ashes into the sky?releasing them high above the earth, to be "rained" back down in millions of droplets of water. Though it's probably deeply illegal, it's still a lovely idea.

Design for Death Living by Ancunel Steyn

"Multifunctional land is not a non-renewable resource," argues Ancunel Steyn, the South African designer behind this proposal. "The question is, how can we reduce space required to store the dead?" Steyn proposed an urban design that would intersperse memorials with public infrastructure: from parks, to art galleries, to mixed-used commercial buildings. The memorials themselves would take up a very small, tissue box-sized space, stacked on a series of walls arranged around the site.

Family Tree by Loucas Papantoniou and Asta Sadauskaite

Two Lithuanian designers created this hexagonal design for an urn-storage system. The idea, as the title suggests, is to create a literal family tree of urns. There's also a digital element, which could come off as smart or tacky, depending on how you feel about SMS-based memorials: "The urn vault is made of wood, with an OLED display cap," explain the duo. "The display emits a serene, pulsing light that conveys spirituality and displays the name of the deceased with a short memorial message."

Souvenair by Chen Jiashan

This simple design, by French artist Chen Jiashan, is half windchime and half urn. "Why should we keep the deceased ones away from our eyes?," asks Jiashan. "The souvenair, small in size but clearly visible, can be hanged at home or in a public place. Its tiny and appeasing 'ding' recalls the presence of the loved one whenever some wind blows."
