TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ? A New Jersey court has ruled a special U.S. Senate election to replace the late Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg (LOW'-tuhn-burg) can be held in October, as it was scheduled by Republican Gov. Chris Christie.
Lautenberg died last week at age 89. Christie scheduled the election for Oct. 16, 20 days before the general elections. Democrats sued, saying it should be held the day voters are going to the polls anyway.
Democrats haven't decided whether to appeal Thursday's ruling.
Four Democrats and two Republicans have filed petitions to run in the Senate race, with Democratic Newark Mayor Cory Booker seen as the front-runner.
Christie taped a humorous bit defending his position for NBC's "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" while slow-jamming the news. The show was bumped by a hockey game, but the video was released Thursday.
